I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. Fidelity polished and buffed the activity room and break room floors on 10/24.
B. Orkin performed routine inspection and pest treatment on 10/13.
II. COLLECTION
A. Regular book orders were placed during the month.
B. 10-day book requests were added weekly.
C. Weeding of music CD781.66 Pr - 781.66 SL was completed.
D. Last copy weeding of books was done weekly.
III. PROGRAMS
A. “Understanding Medicare” a program for adults was presented by the Metropolitan Area
Agency on Aging for thirteen attendees.
B. The Library Board met on 9/3.
C. The Friends met on 9/1.
D. Four sessions of Baby Read/Baby Grow were presented.
E. Four sessions of Preschool Storytime were presented.
F. Magician Norm Barnhart presented a special storytime on 10/16.
G. Bulk loans were prepared for Immaculate Conception School and Mini-Adventure Club.
H. Two literacy-based programs related to the Rainbow Fun Fairy series of books by Daisy
Meadows were presented by Abrakadoodle on 10/18 and 10/27.
I. Teen Read Week Activities, including a library scavenger hunt, were held 10/16-10/31.
J. Five sessions of R.E.A.D Dogs were held.
K. Elaine met with the Adult Book Club met on 10/31 to facilitate discussion of The
Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb by Melanie Benjamin.
L. Six classes from Immaculate Conception School visited.
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. An upgrade to the Sirsi-Dynix Integrated Library System was successfully completed on
10/9 with staff computers upgraded on 10/10. The new upgrade has fixed a number of
bugs and added increased functionality to staff computers for circulation tasks.
V. STAFF
A. MaiKao met with the Friends on 10/1.
B. MaiKao visited Columbia Heights High School for English Learners Family Night to
promote library services and programs.
C. MaiKao, Stacey, and I attended the Minnesota Library Association Conference.
D. I attended a workshop on “Understanding Somali Culture” presented by a staff member
of Hennepin County Libraries and shared the highlights with COH staff.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. I met with the Foundation on 10/3. Details from Spaghetti Dinner were reviewed.
Planning continued for the December film fundraiser.
MISC
A. I made a presentation on the Library’s proposed 2013 Budget at a City Council work
session on 10/1.
B. I gave a brief library tour to new city employees on 10/2.
C. The Library Task Force met twice. Members began work with consultants on the space
needs study and benchmarking of Columbia Heights against comparable libraries in the
metropolitan and Midwest regions.
D. I proctored three examinations this month.
E. I met with the Management Team of the Anoka County Library on 10/11.
F. Major projects:
a. Arranging details of carpeting the East Room on 11/12.
b. Began seeking bids to re-upholster furniture.
c. Began information and bid seeking to address roof runoff through additional gutters
to prevent basement flooding.
