(TDD/706-3692 for deaf or hearing impaired only) CITY COUNCIL LETTER Meeting of: September 4th, 2012 AGENDA SECTION: Work Session ORIGINATING DEPARTMENT: CITY MANAGER NO: PUBLIC WORKS ITEM: PUBLIC ART FOR HUSET PARKWAY BY: Kevin Hansen ROUNDABOUT DATE: August 30th, 2012 DATE: Huset Parkway was constructed in 2004 as part of the overall Industrial Area redevelopment. A roundabout was utilized at the intersection of the former Jefferson Street and 39th Avenue intersection. When originally conceived, the roundabout provided an opportunity for public art and was built with a space in its center for a future piece. Since that time sketches and/or concepts were created but never developed beyond the initial stages. Art for the roundabout center piece was again brought forward in 2012.Attached is a concept level drawing, to scale, of an art piece. The design incorporates four sides, with each side representing a different rendering—having the ability to each tell a different story-interpretation.The piece would be made of architectural concrete and be approximately fifteen(15)feet in height from ground. The top of the monument would be internally lit with a City icon. A brochure is attached detailing the manufacturing company's work with examples. The`art' for each side would be developed by the City of Columbia Heights.Creative sources for the art can be any one of a number of sources such as historical photos, adjacent uses (athletics), the High School, early City development (bootstrap town) or other. The City would construct the foundation in the roundabout center for the art to be mounted on. Funding for the cost of the foundation can be provided from the original Huset Parkway project fund- estimated at$9,000 to $12,000.
