HUMAN SERVICES COMMISSION MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 12, 2001
Meeting called to order at 6:10 pm. Present were Joe Sturdevant, Roger Peterson, Karin Leishman and Council-
member Julienne Wyckoff.
Julienne Wyckoff conducted the meeting and agreed to take minutes.
Minutes from Ma3' 9, 2001 were approve6 We moved right in to New Business - Communit3' Circles
Conversations. Nobody on the Human Ser~rices Commission are involvecL and the Conversatious have already
starte6 However, we would like to be kept posted on its progress, and hopefully get involved in the future.
Discussion moved to planning the 2nd Annual Taste of Columbia Heights, which w~ll take place on March 24,
2002. It was agreed that Murzyn. Hall is still the best location, but we need more space. Perhaps if we Utilize the
rooms on the first floor to spread the event out more7 Julienne will ask Keith Windschitl fi food could be served on
carpeted areas, as two or three restaurants could fit in there. If people have to walk down the stairs, vendors do~
Sere would be disa~'antaged against those serving upstairs.
Tickets will be sold in a&,ance, as well as at the door. Booths representing different cultures are popular, but
entertainment will have to be more strictly monitored.
Leishman suggested putting ads in the local paper to solicit restaurants. This would be done to avoid seeming to
favor certain businesses. Restaurants would be asked to hst possible menu items. However, because of space
constraints, final selection would be up to the Human Services Commission. Restaurants that participated last year
would be first invited, and then vendors that stressed an "Etlmic" cuisine, as that is what the event is about
an3~'ay. 6 restaurants participated last year - E1 Bustan, E1 Tequila, Olive Tree, Sahib's, with the Balkan Express
and Dairy Queen serving desserts and only talcing up a small amount of space. We really only have room for
rnaybe 2 more restaurants, and all vendors should be reminded that they don't need to serve complete meals, just
give tastings.
The next meeting will be on Weds., November 14 at 6:30. It was decided that the latter time was more convenient
to members.
