Enclosed is the agenda packet. I will be unable to attend the meeting, as I will be out of town. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please contact Shelley at 706-3614. I have already heard from one member who will be unable to attend. If several other members will be unable to attend the meeting, it will be cancelled and you will be notified. LLM/sh OFFICIAL PROCEEDINGS COLUMBIA HEIGHTS HUMAN SERVICES COMMISSION MINUTES MAY 10, 2000 CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. Present were commission members Karol, Sturdevant, Peterson, Dempsey, and Holcomb. Also present were Councilmember Wyckoff, Assistant to the City Manager Magee, and School Board member Schmitz. INTRODUCTION OF NEW MEMBERS Roger Peterson, Tammy Dempsey, and Gloria Holcomb were introduced and welcomed as new members of the commission. 3. APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES e Motion by Karol, seconded by Sturdevant to approve the minutes of March 8, 2000. Roll Call: All ayes. OLD BUSINESS Ao Joint Meeting with Fridley Human Resources Commission-The Commission previously came up with two potential meeting dates for a joint meeting with Fridley's Human Resources Commission. As those dates did not work for Fridley, Magee asked those present for potential dates for July or August. She stated Thursdays work best for Fridley. The commission members came up with three potential meeting dates: Thursday, July 13 at 7 pm, or Thursday, July 27 at 7 pm, or Thursday, August 10 at 7 pm. Columbia Heights would host the meeting. Magee will contact Dave Sallman, Fridley Public Safety Director (who serves as the staffliaison to Fridley's Human Resources Commission) with the potential dates, and notify the commission members which date is selected. B. Other Old Business-None Page 2 May 10, 2000 NEW BUSINESS Diversity Issues in the Schools-Discussion with Tammy Schmitz, School Board Member. Tammy Schmitz indicated that the School Board is interested in joining community groups in attempting to celebrate the diversity in our community. She spoke about a group called "community circles" which she attended. It is a formal organization which will facilitate discussion. Augsburg College houses them. Richard Little runs the organization. She indicated that Richfield and Bloomington's Human Rights Commissions have implemented programs utilizing community circles. Discussion ensued regarding the "community circles" concept, and what could be done in our community to "celebrate diversity". Discussion took place about holding a "Taste of Columbia Heights". After much discussion, it was decided: -Magee will contact the Richfield Human Rights Commission and Wyckoffwill contact the Bloomington Human Rights Commission regarding their involvement in community circles. -Magee will have the written information provided by Schmitz photocopied and distributed to the commission members. -The commission will discuss "Taste of Columbia Heights" at their next meeting. Humanitarian of the Year Nominations and Selection of Humanitarian of the Year The commission reviewed the nominations received. The consensus was that all the individuals nominated were deserving of the award. After much discussion, a written ballot vote was taken. As a result, Vi Tabb was selected as the 2000 Humanitarian of the Year. Holcomb offered to notify her of her selection, the reception to be held in her honor, and the opportunity to ride in the Jamboree Parade on June 23. Discussion regarding Humanitarian of the Year Reception The reception is scheduled for Monday, June 12 fi-om 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at City Hall Conference Room I. The presentation of the award will take place at the City Council Meeting which follows at 7:00 pm. City Staffwill take care of getting the punch, cake and cookies, the corsage, and the plaque. Commission members were asked to obtain donations fi-om various business. Magee indicated the Mayor donated a $20 gift certificate for the 2000 Humanitarian of the Year Award recipient. Invitational flyers will be given to Vi Tabb to distribute to family and friends. Sturdevant will attempt to obtain a convertible Vi Tabb can ride in during the Jamboree Parade. Mayor's Prayer Breakfast Magee indicated that Commission Chairpersons received an invitation to the Mayor's First Annual Prayer Breakfast to be held Tuesday, May 16 fi.om 7 am - 8:45 am at Murzyn Hall-La.Mere was not attending-so there was a ticket available for a commission member, if interested. Holcomb indicated an interest and will be attending. E. Other New Business- None 6. ADJOURNMENT Motion by Karol, seconded by Holcomb to adjourn the meeting at 8:30 pm. All ayes. Roger gave a recap of the joint meeting with Fridley Human Resotuces Commission held Jul)' 13. We then went into a discussion of our future plans. A "Taste of Columbia Heights" event was discussed. Julienne would ca]] School Superintendent Dave Behlow to set up a meeting, to see if 'Taste" could be done with the schools. Meeting adjoumed. FOLLOW-UP Julienne met wah Dave Behlow and Judy Yantos of the Family Center on Oct 19 The school is very interested in co-hosting such an event This was a very early planning stage meeting but it was agreed .MurD.'n Hall would be the best location, and the end of March, 2001 a good time for the schools. The event so fa~ would go like th~s: For a fee of maybe a $1: guests could receive a small platter samphng from area restaurants such as Sahibs, Olive Tree. Jang Wong..~a't Work from different countries and by our immigrants would be on display.
