Rebecca Loader, Library Director From: Mai Kao Xiong, Children’s Librarian Subject: June Operational Report Date: June 29, 2012 I.PROGRAMS a.Bookawocky, the Summer Reading Program, kicked off on June 1f or children and teens. The volunteers are busy with assisting in registrations and awarding prizes to participants. b.Two storytime programs were held this month Tuesday mornings: one on 6/19 and one on 6/26. Summer attendance is almost twice the size of numbers from earlier this spring! c.Wacky Wednesday programs were held on 6/13, 6/20, and 6/27. We had a program attendance high with Dazzling Dave the National Yo-Yo Master on 6/20. Anoka County Child & Teen Check-ups is present at each of these programs with an informational booth and giveaways to hand out. d.Due to an overbooking, the Magical Mia program on 6/27 was rescheduled for an earlier 10 am start time. In anticipation that not everyone was aware of the time change and to accommodate families and groups expecting the usual 2pm program, a literacy-based Drop in Craft was offered as an alternative activity to those who made the effort to come to the library. e.Two special programs were held this month and well attended: Dinosaurs! presented by Mad Science of MN and Lego Camp by Abrakadoodle. f.Bulk loan materials (3 bins, 45 books each) were prepared for Adventure Club and Mini Adventures and picked up on 6/7 and 6/14. g.Program counts are as follows: Date Program Children Adults 6/1 Highland Summer Reading Visit 483 30 6/4 ICS – (1/2) SRP visit 12 1 6/5 ICS – (K & 4/5) SRP visit 21 2 6/5 North Park SRP Visit 482 37 6/13 Bazillions 72 C & A 6/16 Mad Science: Dinosaurs 23 14 6/19 Storytime 56 25 6/20 Dazzling Dave 110 62 6/21 Lego 28 7 6/22 Lego 32 6 6/25 Lego 17 3 6/26 Storytime 42 23 6/27 Magical Mia 41 18 6/27 Drop in Craft 18 7 6/30 Summer Reading Program 411 169 II.COLLECTION a.Book orders were placed in the areas as follows: SLJ 2/2012, Booklist 01/12, Booklist 2/15/12, Kirkus 2/15/12. b.We are well ahead of the weeding schedule, completed through the Juvenile and Easy J’s. c.Because of low circulation due to location, easy reader nonfiction titles have been integrated back into the easy nonfiction section. III.PROJECTS a.Because of high interest in programs, two more Lego Camp dates were added to the summer schedule: one on 6/25 and another 2 day camp on 7/23 and 7/30. b.A draft of Fall programs has been submitted to Ruth Dunn on 6/29 for inclusion in Heights Happenings. c.Performance goals: I have completed 1 genre-based reading list. A visual proposal for shelving changes was submitted to Becky Loader for inclusion with next year’s Budget Proposal. d.Summer Reading VolunTeens: 19 teen volunteers have put in 205 hours of service this month. These teens are assigned volunteer shifts Monday through Saturday, and they assist with programs, the reading club, and small projects in the Children’s department. i.An additional Volunteer Orientation training was held on 6/8 for those unable to attend the May session. IV.GRANTS, MEETINGS, COMMUNITY a.School visits were made to Highland Elementary (6/1), North Park Elementary (6/5), and ICS (6/4 and 6/5). Library program promotional bags containing a parent letter, bookmark, and events calendar will be distributed to each student. Teachers, parents, and students alike have expressed overwhelming enthusiasm for the programs being offered. Almost all programs have full registrations and children on wait lists. b.Jamboree was a festive event, allowing me to connect with community members and families. Children’s contributed tattoos and bookmarks to give away at the Library table. V.STAFF a.I was present at the City County meeting on I attended Collection HQ meeting at LSS on 6/27. Another meeting will be scheduled in the upcoming weeks as the product is developed. b.The department has been extremely busy this month. Pages have been spending a majority of shifts shelving and upkeep of the department. They have also been weeding, assisting with programs, processing books, and making booklists with the selection tools. st c.Library Aide: Candice has primarily been compiling 21 Century program statistics- reporting program registrations and attendance. She assisted with sending out library cards, sign in for programs, made publicity posters for Children’s programs and the Spaghetti Dinner, and filed paperwork. d.Children’s Clerk: Kelly Olson placed and received book orders and magazines, made a Summer Reading Program school visit to ICS, drew up and sent out performance contracts, submitted PO’s, and collected statistics.
