Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: June operational report DATE: June 30, 2012 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 6/29. B. The concrete replacement at the south entrance to the building was completed 6/1. After waiting a week for it to cure, Public Works installed the new table, bench, and bike rack before programs started. With the beautiful planting job done by John Nordland, the patio looks fabulous! C. NSI provided routine quarterly maintenance on the HVAC 6/13. D. Master Mechanical came out to inspect a problem with the boiler 6/14. E. The windows were cleaned 6/15. F. Orkin performed routine maintenance 6/21. II. COLLECTION A. Regular book orders were placed during the month. In addition, an order of replacements and updated editions was placed. B. Adult weeding is completed through Fiction G and through 741. C. Collection development in the adult 200’s has been started. Collection development in the 000-100’s has been completed. D. Review of the periodical subscription list has been started. E. 10-day book requests were added weekly. III. PROGRAMS A. Summer Reading Program started 6/1. The metro-wide theme for 2012 is “Bookawocky.” As of 6/20, there were 328 registered as elementary age readers and 125 registered as teens. B. Mai Kao finished up the visits to the elementary schools to promote Summer Reading Club at the beginning of the month. C. The Friends met 6/4 with 8 members in attendance. The Friends voted to purchase a coat rack for the Boardroom, a tabletop book display unit, and $600 worth of juvenile books and music on CD with the money they have raised. D. The Library Board met 6/6 with all members in attendance. E. “Live @ the Library” rocked the building 6/9. All rooms had artists and performers scheduled, and the Friends were enthusiastic greeters. Thanks to Renee and Mai Kao for their work in over-seeing the unquiet day in the Library! F. The summer Volunteens started working the week of 6/11. G. Mai Kao conducted two sessions of preschool story time in June. H. Mad Science presented a program 6/16. I. Three Lego Camp programs were held on 6/21, 6/22, and 6/23. All three sessions were registered full! J. Three Wacky Wednesdays were held during June: the Bazillions (6/13), Dazzling Dave st (6/20), and Magical Mia (6/27). These programs are provided through 21 Century grant funding. K. Staff, members of the Friends, the Library Board, the Foundation Board, and the Library Task Force worked at a booth in front of the Library on 6/22 during the Jamboree Parade to promote library services. We all got to practice our tattoo skills and to meet and greet many people. Thanks to Marna Gomez, Tricia Conway, Colleen Werdien, Dave Larson, Nile Harper, Nancy Hoium, Ramon Gomez, Stacey Hendren, Marsha Tubbs, Mai Kao Xiong, Kate Collopy, Dan Kleinfehn, Gail Olson, Bruce Magnuson, Pat Sowada, Renee Dougherty, and Renee Reweitzer for all their help. L. The Adult Book Club met 6/27 and discussed the book, White tiger. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Replacements have been ordered for the departmental laptop and the desktop workstation at Reference 1. V. STAFF A. I attended one Library Management Team meeting in June. B. Summer schedule started 6/11. C. I met with the part-time Library Supervisors 6/2 to go over the procedure for the new HVAC controls and to review several training issues. D. Congratulations to Library Page Gianna Ritzko on her graduation from St. Anthony High School. Gianna, who is a former Library Volunteen, will continue her education at St. Catherine’s University in the fall. Following a long-standing tradition, the staff took her out to breakfast to celebrate. th E. Kelly Olson celebrated her 20 anniversary with the Library in June. F. One Pages had a service anniversary in June: Michelle Wermerskirchen. G. MELSA technology money will provide the staff with access to a collection analysis tool called “Collection HQ.” Renee, Mai Kao, and I will receive training at ACL on the set up and use of this product. H. I attended the Public Service Meeting at ACL 6/28. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 6/6 with 8 members present. The publicity materials for the Spaghetti Dinner were approved as changed and will be ordered from Rapid Graphics. . Results of the Linder’s fundraiser are not yet available. Members of the Board will work at the Library booth at the Jamboree 6/22. VII. MISC A. Delivery switched to three days a week for the summer. Saturday delivery will resume after Labor Day. B. The Library Task Force met twice during the month and held a public forum “Listening Session” 6/25. The group is moving forward in its fact-finding mission. C. Staff would like to recognize Steve Smith, 2012 Humanitarian of the Year, for all his support of the Library and the City. Steve is a current member of the Library Board and has been a community activist for many years. Congratulations to a wonderful person and a dedicated citizen of Columbia Heights. D. Saturday hours changed to 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on 6/16. These hours will be in effect till the Saturday after Labor Day. E. Major projects: a. Preparation and submission of proposed 2013 budget b. Scheduling c. Preparation for summer programs d. Revision of job descriptions e. Update of procedures manual f.
