Rebecca Loader, Library Director From: Mai Kao Xiong, Children’s Librarian Subject: May Operational Report Date: May 30, 2012 I.PROGRAMS a.Two special programs: Gary Harbo author/illustrator art workshop and the Raptors of MN were held this month. Both were well attended. thth b.ICS classes visited for the last time of this year on May 15 & 16. c.A Global Academy class visited the library for assistance in researching for school reports. d.Several groups from the school district visited the library for a storytime, tour, and summer reading programming information. Instead of noting the date, last use, and number of circulations on the inside back cover of each book, staff will now weed in the same manner as done in Adult Services. They will record circulation information on a notecard, insert it in the book, and have it set aside for the Children’s Librarian to review. III.PROJECTS a.Children’s Book Week was celebrated May 7-12. It was kicked off with the author visit by Gary Harbo, and ended with the family program presented by the Raptor Center. b.Teen Volunteer Orientation Training was held on May 24. We have 18 volunteers signed on, with a few more applications just recently submitted. With this turnout, we will try to have volunteers on Saturdays as well this summer. c.Summer Reading Program: i.Prizes for the Children’s &Teen Summer Reading have been ordered and purchased. We will be receiving them in the week s to come. ii.Materials, sign up information, and decorating the department is underway. IV.GRANTS, MEETINGS, COMMUNITY a.I will be visiting each other elementary schools to present the Summer Reading Program to each of the grades as follows: 5/31- Valley View, 6/1- Highland, 6/5-North Park. Promotional bags containing a parent letter, bookmark, and events calendar will be distributed to each student. V.STAFF a.I attended Staff Day at Bunker Hill on May 10. Additionally, I prepared for, attended and presented on children’s services changes and Summer Reading at the page staff meeting on May 22. b.In addition to daily tasks, pages prepared the materials for distribution to schools and assisted in programs. c.Library Aide: Candice Marsh made and prepared registrations sheets, publicity posters, volunteer orientation materials, bulletin board displays, and flyers for Summer Reading programs and events. She also sent press releases, organized the storage rooms, made a summer reading prize display, compiled a reading list, and filed POs. d.Children’s Clerk: Kelly Olson updated the teen volunteer master list. She prepared materials as well as attended and assisted during the volunteer orientation training. She submitted/received book orders and magazines, assisted in preparing for the school visits, and worked on money and copy machine stats.
