April operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 4/20.
B. National Sprinkler completed the annual test of the sprinkler system 4/25. A faulty
switch was fixed by Firenet on 4/27.
C. Heights Electric was here 4/9 to check the emergency door alarms, the security lights,
and the emergency lights.
D. The fire extinguishers were serviced 4/27.
E. The windows were cleaned 4/19.
II. COLLECTION
A. Two adult paperback orders were placed.
B. The Friends completed another successful “Love Your Library” campaign in March, and
orders from the donations have begun to be received. The bookplates look especially
nice. Congratulations to the Friends!
C. Orders for CD’s and DVD’s were placed and received.
D. I completed weeding adult 640-659 and Adult Fiction up through F. The adult 745’s
have been started.
E. Two orders of updated editions and replacements were placed.
F. A large order of collection development materials from the adult 300’s were ordered and
received. Many new editions were put into the 300’s.
III. PROGRAMS
A. The Library Board met 4/4 with eight in attendance.
B. “Struck: Music for 3 Percussionists” was held on 4/7. This program was funded with
Legacy Fund dollars.
C. National Library Week was celebrated 4/9-4/14 with the theme, “You Belong @ Your
Library.”
D. MacPhail presented a special “Sing, Play, Learn” program 4/10 for pre-schoolers.
E. Bulk loan was delivered to the schools 4/12.
F. The Friends met 4/2 at the Dragon House Cafe with 11 members present.
G. Four sessions of pre-school story time were held during the month.
H. Two special field trips of ELL students visited the Library on 4/11 and 11/18.
I. Five sessions of Baby Read/Baby Grow were held during the month of April.
J. During Severe Weather Awareness Week, the staff participated in the drill on 4/19. Ten
patrons and six staff were evacuated to the safety of the basement in approximately 3
minutes.
K. Four sessions of Read Dogs were held during the month. An amazing celebration of
reading to dogs (and a cat) was held 4/30 with the assistance of Abrakadoodle.
Participants were able to make and to take home their own personal Read Dog.
L. The adult book group discussed Huckleberry Finn at the meeting 4/25.
M. Three classes from ICS visited the Library during the week of 4/23.
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. CH 1, a public access computer workstation, was made operational again on 4/3 after
being down for nearly a month.
B. Questions about the response speed on the public access computers and the public access
catalog continue to arise. IS has run tests, but no answer has been discerned as of the end
of April.
V. STAFF
A. Ramon and I spent some time working on the Maintenance Procedures binder on 4/5.
B. Ramon attended 8-hours of website training 4/10.
C. I attended two Management Team meetings at the County in April.
D. I have been working with Linda Magee to update all the Library job descriptions during
the month.
E. I proctored a test 4/17.
F. I attended the Public Service meeting at ACL 4/19.
G. Marsha Tubbs was honored on her retirement with a reception 4/23 at the Library. Many
friends, family, and co-workers came to wish her the best on her future endeavors. The
City Council also honored her 28 years of service with a plaque presented that evening.
Marsha led both groups in “Open Them/Shut Them,” which was her signature in starting
her story times. Huzzah, Marsha!!
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation Board met 4/4 with all members present.
B. A fundraiser will be held over the week-end of Mother’s Day at Linders with 15% of the
total pre-tax purchase of people presenting a printed coupon being donated to the
Foundation. Coupons, posters, and flyers were distributed to the membership.
C. Cliff reported on his meeting with Tom Letness of the Heights Theatre. Tom is
enthusiastic about the Hitchcock themed fundraiser and the silent auction items geared to
movie themes. The date will be firmed up after Sharon talks to the Sister Cities group
about possible collaboration between the movie and their spaghetti supper.
VII. MISC
A. The CHPL is one of the victims in a metro-wide materials theft scam. Progress is being
made on retrieving some of the materials.
B. Special projects:

i. Staff has prepared background information and gathered statistics.
