March operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUPIMENT
A. The windows were cleaned 3/22.
B. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 3/16.
C. Because of the unseasonably hot weather, the air conditioning was turned on 3/19.
D. NSI/Horwitz performed routine maintenance on the HVAC systems 3/20.
E. I met with Tim Barnes 3/15 about a procedures manual for the Library cleaner.
F. Renee, Mai Kao, and I received training on the new HVAC controls from Tempco 3/8. I
will train the Library Supervisors on how to do temporary adjustments.
II. COLLECTION
A. Four book orders were placed and received. Two adult paperback book orders were
placed and received. DVD and music CD orders were placed and received.
B. Pages are working on repairing the adult non-fiction books.
C. Adult weeding is progressing. It is complete through Fiction E and 658. Six shelves
remain to complete the 650’s.
D. Collection development in the 300’s continues. Many titles have new editions.
III. PROGRAMS
A. Three classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the Library during the week of
3/12-16. Three classes also visited the Library during the week of 3/26-30.
B. The Friends met 3/5 with 10 members present.
C. The Library Board met 3/7 with eight members in attendance.
D. The bulk loan was picked up by the schools on 3/8.
E. Teen Tech Week was celebrated 3/12-17. A special Hunger Games program was held
3/16 with a sky-high attendance. Pictures from the program were in the Focus and the
Northeaster.
F. Three sessions of preschool story time were held during the month.
G. Baby Read/Baby Grow storytime started 3/12. Three sessions were held during the
month.
H. The Friends special project, “Love Your Library,” started 3/1 and ran through 3/31. Staff
is thrilled with the response from the patrons to replace lost, damaged, and missing
classic materials in the circulating collection. Huzzah to the Friends!
I. The Adult Book Club met 3/28 to discuss Sarah’s key.
J. The spring session of Read Dogs started 3/12. Two dog teams and one cat team are
providing reading re-enforcement for kids. Three sessions were held during the month.

This popular program is funded through the 21 Century Grant.

IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. After approval of the City-wide policy on social media, Ramon has launched the
Library’s Facebook page. Please check it out and “like” it!
B. CH 1, a public access computer, was down two weeks (3/19-30).
C. A Java update had to be installed individually on the public computers in order for
Homework Rescue to work.
V. STAFF
A. I proctored 3 exams during the month.
B. Mai Kao monitored the last required MELSA webinar 3/7.

C. Mai Kao and I attended the 21 Century Grant Board meeting 3/14 at the School District.
A site visit from the MDE grant administrator will take place in June. Plans are well
underway for the next quarter of programming made available through the grant funds.
D. Mai Kao completed her first six months of service as the Children’s Librarian in March.
E. Ramon attended training on how to set up a Facebook page 3/19.
F. Renee attended the City Safety Committee meeting 3/14.
G. Renee participated in a webinar on zero-based programming 3/27.
H. I participated in a new employee tour 3/28.
I. I attended the ACL Management Team meeting 3/29.
J. Ramon Gomez completed his fifth year of service as a Library Clerk and his tenth year of
working for the Library.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation Board met 3/9 with seven members present. A great discussion about
Mr. Letness’ presentation at last month’s meeting resulted in the choice of pursuing an
Alfred Hitchcock retrospective for the December fundraiser. Preparations were made for
the Linder’s fundraiser coming up in May.
VII. MISCELLANEOUS
A. Major Projects
a. State version of the 2011 annual report
b. Staff scheduling
c. Preparation for the first meeting of the Library Task Force
B. I served as one of the judges for the Sister Cities essay contest this year. Winners of the
local contest go on to compete on the national level.
