Rebecca Loader, Library Director From: Mai Kao Xiong, Children’s Librarian Subject: February Operational Report Date: February 29, 2012 I.PROGRAMS a.With 5 sessions this month, Winter Storytime wrapped up on 2/29. b.The next storytime session will begin in 2 weeks. c.Bulk loan materials (3 bins) were prepared for ICS and picked up on 2/9. d.Classes from Immaculate Conception School visited on 2/22 and 2/23. e.Kid’s Club, an afternoon reading program for grade-schoolers was offered and held each afternoon during Dist. 13’s Energy Break (2/21-2/24.) f.The Winter Reading Program wrapped up on 2/29. g.Program counts are as follows: Program Title Date Children TEENS Adults ECFE Family Winter Picnic *offsite* 2/3 98 84 Storytime 2/7 25 12 Storytime 2/14 19 8 Storytime 2/21 10 8 Kid’s Club 2/21 12 1 ICS-K 2/22 11 2 Kid’s Club 2/22 21 5 Kid’s Club 2/23 9 1 ICS-1/2 2/23 12 1 ICS-3/4 2/23 9 1 Kid’s Club 2/24 9 2 Storytime 2/28 19 11 Froggy Storytime 2/29 1 1 WRP New Registrations 2/1-2/29 30 2 TOTALS 285 2 137 II.COLLECTION a.Book orders were placed in the areas as follows: 1 J nonfiction; 1 graphic novel; 1 YA and J Fic, 1 series updates & replacement; Booklist 10/15/2011; and SLJ 8/2011, SLJ 9/2011. b.This month we weeded in the following areas: J Fic G and YA PBK. c.I have been worked on a large order of J Fic and YA Fic audio CDs. III.PROJECTS a.The following summer programs/performers have been booked: 6/21 Abrakadoodle Lego Program 6/22 7/19 David LaRochelle, author and illustrator 7/13 MN Center for Book Arts Booking Making 7/20 Workshops 7/27 7/31 Abrakadoodle American Girl Program 8/7 Schiffelly Puppets a.Teen Programming: Planning is being finalized for Teen Tech Week and a Hunger Games (Book to Movie) Launch. Publicity for the week and program has begun. b.Summer Reading Program: MELSA is continually updating changes to the SRP and preparation is being made to accommodate for these. Planning for supplies and incentives is underway. c.The READ Dog teams have confirmed (2 dog teams & 1 cat) and registration for the program has begun. d.Registration for Baby Read Baby Grow began on 2/13. IV.GRANTS, MEETINGS, COMMUNITY a.Grants: Becky Loader, Linda Ernst, and I met on 2/28 to discuss the budget and st reporting for the 21 Century Grant. We also went over emails on how to submit attendance reports, when to submit them, and questions on program information. This meeting was productive in that it clarified issues that would help us have a smooth and successful end to Year 3 of the grant. b.Community: ECFE held a “Family Winter Picnic” on 2/3. Representing the library, I attended the event, holding a program called, “Read, Write, Sing, Talk and Play with Columbia Heights Public Library.” Early literacy-based activities and storytimes were presented. Staff positively reported this was their largest attendance of this sort of program they’ve thus far held. c.Children’s and Teen Services was presented at Citizen’s Academy on 2/9. V.STAFF a.Trainings: I completed a Web Junction webinar training on 2/10. Kelly and I wrapped up training our new Library Aide, Candice Marsh. I also attended ACL’s eAudio training by Monica Campbell on 2/14. b.Pages: This month the staff worked on the following: shelving, weeding, program set up, Winter Reading Program preparations, bulletin board displays, selection tool title lists, and processing new books. c.Library Aide: Candice Marsh produced publicity materials for the following programs: READ Dogs, Love My Library, Baby Storytime, & spring storytime. She prepared materials for 3 bulletin boards, made the pages shelf reading schedule, prepared new shelf labels, labeled new additions to the storytime collection, and updated the Winter Reading Program registration. She works diligently, and she is always willing as ask questions. We are glad to have someone again in this position and look forward to her being a part of the team. d.Children’s Clerk: Kelly Olson submitted the annual report to the city, worked on finances and money count, placed book orders and purchase requests for upcoming programs, received magazine, and continued sending out performer contracts.
