Funding for Minnesota Book Awards Author Events APPLICATION FO Please complete this form, or generate your own form with the same information. Applicant Organization: Columbia Heights Public Library Project Contact: Renee Dougherty, Adult Services Librarian Address: 820 40 Ave NE City, State, Zip: Columbia Heights, MN 55421 - 2903 Phone: 763 - 706 -3690 Email: renee.dougherty @ci.columbia - heights.mn.us Website: http://www.ci.columbia-heights.mn.us/departments/library.asp Please briefly address the following: Projected total request for funding reimbursement (may not exceed $500): The Columbia Heights Public Library will host an author event as part of the 2012 Winter Jackets adult reading program and requests $500 to provide an honorarium for author Julie Kramer, winner of a 2009 Minnesota Book Award. What is your library's service area or audience? If the organization is not a library, how is the organization associated with a library? The Columbia Heights Public Library is a department of the City of Columbia Heights which partners with the Anoka County Library system to provide library service to a first -ring suburb of 19,000 residents. Columbia Heights has an active community of readers. Many grew up in the Library enjoying preschool story time, remained in the community to raise their own families, and eventually retired here. The Library also serves new arrivals to the City from Central America and East Africa, who are seeking the quality of life enjoyed by long -time residents. The Library collection numbers over 70,000 items, with strong circulation of genre fiction. Have you previously received a funding reimbursement from our office for a Minnesota Book Awards author event? If so, please indicate the year(s) in which you received the reimbursement. The Columbia Heights Public Library received a grant of $400 in 2008 to host an evening program with the Minnesota Crime Wave: William Kent Krueger, Ellen Hart, and Carl Brookins. The event was well attended and appreciated by the local community of mystery readers. Briefly describe the event or program to be funded under the program: Plans are being made for an author event to be presented as part of the Library's annual adult winter reading program, Winter Jackets. Participation in the adult winter reading program is high at Columbia Heights. In 2011, 125 book reviews were submitted, the second highest participation rate among Anoka County Library branches. A similar high rate of participation is anticipated for the 2012 program. Alongside the annual MELSA- sponsored winter reading programs for adults (Winter Jackets), the Columbia Heights Public Library will be adding a program for children (Book Warms.) Both programs will run from January 9 through February 29, 2012. By offering combined reading programs for adults and children, Winter Jackets and Book Warms will celebrate the joy of reading for all ages; encourage parents and adults to model reading behavior for children and new readers; and engage the community in conversation arising from reading and books. As part of the adult portion of the program, the public will be invited to "warm up" over coffee and conversation with local author Julie Kramer at 11:00 a.m. on February 8, 2012. As a tie in between the program and the community, participants are invited to bring a hot beverage, such as a can of coffee or cocoa, to their local library to be donated to the five food shelves that serve Anoka County. Book Award winner(s) or finalist(s) to present at the program (if unknown, state that it is TBD, and then list presenter(s) or type of author - mystery writer, young adult author, etc. — that you plan to schedule): Julie Kramer, who won the 2009 Minnesota Book Award for genre fiction for her debut novel, Stalking Susan, will speak about her series of mystery thrillers featuring St. Paul news reporter Riley Spartz, investigative reporting, and the role of women in crime fiction. Date, time, and location of the event or program (approximate date if TBD): February 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Library Activity Room. Describe the number of people and type of audience (seniors, teens, etc.) you expect to attend: The conversation with Julie will be open to readers of all ages, especially those fond of mysteries, thrillers, and local authors. I expect the audience to include members of the Library's adult book group (which meets monthly to discuss fiction and non - fiction titles), fiction readers, mystery readers, and Julie's fans. Because the envisioned event will be held during the day, staff expects adults, retired or not working, and those able to spend their lunch breaks at the Library. Staff hopes to attract between 40 -60 people, based on attendance at a similar event held in September 2011. Briefly describe your plans to publicize and promote the event: • Display posters and distribute bookmarks in the Columbia Heights Public Library and the eight other public libraries in Anoka County. • Word of mouth will be used at the circulation desk. • Display posters in City buildings. • Posting on the Library's website. • Announcement in the quarterly newsletter mailed to all City residents. • Promoted via press releases to the Columbia Heights & Fridley Sun - Focus, Northeaster, the Star Tribune, and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. • Posted on the electronic calendar on the Star Tribune website. Budget: How do you expect to expend funds? Author honoraria: $500 Author travel: $ 0 Author lodging/food: $0 Publicity (includes advertising, printing and postage): $0 Hospitality for author and guests: $35 A match is not required for this reimbursement funding. However, if you expect to have cash expenses beyond the grant amount, please list the entire projected cash expense for the project, and your other major source(s) of income for the project: Expenses for the event are expected to be $535. The operating budget for adult programming will be used to offset any expenses not covered by the requested grant. Further, we resolve to carry out the project as it is described in the attached application, pledge to return the evaluation report within two weeks following the event (must be received by Thursday, November 15, 2012), and abide by the other requirements stipulated in the application outline.
