PROGRAMS a. Classes from Immaculate Conception School visited on 1/10, 1/12, and 1/31. b. Bulk loan materials (4 bins) were prepared for Adventure Club and picked up on 1/4. Bulk loan of materials (3 bins) were prepared for Immaculate Conception and picked up on 1/12. c. The Winter Storytime session began on Tuesday, 1/17. It is enjoyable to see returning participants as well as new families attend. d. COLLECTION a. Book orders were placed in the areas as follows: 1 J nonfiction; 1 award winners; 2 series updates & replacement; Booklist 9/1/2011, 9/15/2011, 10/1/2011; and SLJ 7/2011. Orders to be placed include the following: award winning titles, b. Shelving labels continue to be updated, with old ones being replaced throughout the department due shifting or being worn down. c. Weeding a. Weeding is now caught up to schedule after being behind in the J Fiction area for the latter half of the year. We are currently on schedule up to the H’s in fiction and 790’s in nonfiction. III. PROJECTS a. Programs for the spring and summer of 2012 continue to be scheduled and finalized. b. Program summaries were written and submitted to Heights Happenings for March, April, and May events. c. A list of 30 classic children’s titles was submitted to Friends of the Library, per request for the “Love Your Library” project. d. The following programs/performers have been booked: 5/7 Gary Harbo, author and illustrator 5/12 U of M Raptor Center 6/5 MacPhail Center for Music 6/13 The Bazillions 6/20 Dazzling Dave National Yo-yo Master 6/27 Magical Mia 7/3 MacPhail Center for Music 7/11 Magician Matt Dunn 7/18 Alan Johnson Comedy Juggler Extraordinaire 7/25 Dakota Wild Animals 7/31 American Girl Tea Party 8/2 COMO Zoo – Bird-a-wocky e. The children’s winter reading program Book Warms will continue in to the next month. f. We are currently waiting for information on the Summer Reading Program. Details, the program, and promotional items will be released after MELSA meets at the end of this month. IV. GRANTS, MEETING, COMMUNITY st a. Grants: The 21 Century Grant has been renewed for another two years. Becky and I have met twice to discuss budgets and programming. It was decided a meeting need to be scheduled to meet with Linda Ernst. b. Community: I attended two Dist. 13 Kindergarten Registrations. A table representing the library was set up, and I was able to talk with families about the library, its programs, and services. A teacher request to pull 50 books for classroom use was also filled on 1/5. V. STAFF a. Trainings: I attended MELSA’s all-day training on Every Child Ready to Read 2, presented by Saroj Ghoting. Informative and encouraging, this workshop gave the research and support of the importance of early literacy practices, and it equipped me with the resources in integrate early literacy components into my storytimes. I also completed a WebJunction webinar training on 1/18. b. Children’s Department Staff: This month the staff worked on the following: weeding J fiction and non-fiction, assisted with pulling books for bulletin board displays, finished cleaning YA CDs, prepared and put up new shelf labels, shifted easy books, filed vendor and publisher catalogs, completed several selection tools, and processed new books and discarded withdrawn books. Kelly and I both additionally have been training our new Library Aide, Candice Marsh. c. Kelly Olson worked on reporting program statistics, finances and money count, placed book orders, weeded magazines, and wrote and sent out performer contracts.
