I.Programs
a.The Friends of the Library met on November 7. The group accepted the resignation of
President Rita Norberg and nominated and elected Kay Reiners to serve as president in
2012. During the month of November, the Friends oversaw the collection of new
children’s books for Project Bookshelf and delivered them to SACA (Southern Anoka
Community Action) for distribution to needy families for the holidays.
b.At Home Service selected and delivered forty-two items to seven patrons this month.
c.Four volunteers contributed sixteen hours of service this month. Volunteers served as
reading buddies, delivered materials to At Home patrons, assembled a scrapbook of
library events and pulled materials for a book display. A new volunteer, Carol Howard,
began in November.
d.Thirteen people engaged in discussion of Betty Smith’s “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn”
Group member Barbara Tantanella facilitated the discussion. The group also selected
the books to be read in 2012.
e.The Sister Cities committee received 103 entries for the prize drawing as part of Polish-
American Heritage month. Six names were drawn to receive the houseplants.
II.Collection Development
a.Small orders for adult audiobooks were placed with Baker and Taylor and Midwest
Tapes.
b.Year-end orders for DVDs, including feature films and instructional videos, were
placed with Baker and Taylor and Midwest Tapes.
c.Music CDs, including popular award winners, holiday collections and operas missing
from the collection, were purchased from Baker and Taylor.
III.Projects
a.The main bulletin board promoted National Novel Writing Month, which encourages
participants to write 50,000 words during the month.
b.The slat wall display featured craft books under the theme “Handmade Holidays.”
c.A small class of ESL students from the Adult Basic Education center visited the library
on November 4 for a tour and to sign up for library cards.
d.I attended the Safety Committee meeting on November 9 where the committee
reviewed the 5-year summary of injuries prepared by the League of Minnesota Cities.
e.I attended the class on library ebook lending, especially for the Kindle readers, taught
by Anoka county library staff at the Columbia Heights Library.
f.I attended CPR training provided by the Police and Fire Departments.
g.Orders for library supplies were placed with Office Depot and Demco. Material security
supplies were acquired from Minitex and book processing supplies were acquired from
General Book Covers this month.
h.I submitted a request for funding from the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library to
cover the costs of bringing author Julie Kramer to the Library in February 2012. I was
notified on November 21 that the request was approved and will be fully funded.
i.I presented a brief report on At Home Service and Project Bookshelf at the November
th
28 City Council meeting.
