Rebecca Loader From: Renee Dougherty Subject: October 2011 Operational Report Date: October 27, 2011 I.Programs a.The Friends of the Library met on October 3 at the Dragon House. The primary business of the meeting was discussion and unanimous approval of a resolution requesting City Council appointment of a task force for planning a new building to house the public library. b.At Home Service selected and delivered thirty-seven items to six patrons this month. At Home Service participants with visual impairments requests audiobooks, others requests titles used in the OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute, others request classical music on CD, and some, like other library users, simply want the latest mysteries, romances, and New York Times bestsellers. c.Five volunteers contributed twenty-one and a half hours of service this month. Volunteers served as reading buddies, delivered materials to At Home patrons, reviewed DVDs and audiobooks for damage, and prepared items for the booksale cart. d.Fifteen people engaged in a spirited discussion of Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Never Let Me Go” although many claimed that they didn’t like the book. Four new people joined the core book group after hearing about it at the David Housewright event in September. II.Collection Development a.A small order for adult audiobooks was placed with Baker and Taylor, including popular fiction and historical non-fiction titles. b.Non-fiction DVDs, including documentaries, humor, and musical self-instruction videos, were ordered from Baker and Taylor. III.Projects a.The Sisters Cities Committee installed a display on Poland in the Adult Reading Room so a display of books and videos on Poland and Polish American heritage was placed on the slat wall. The bulletin board continued to carry a message to encourage patrons to sign up for a library card. b.I connected a patron who is trying to complete a GED, with a member of the Friends of the Library who will be working with her on reading comprehension. This mentoring relationship is part of the “Buddy Up and Read” program. c.Orders for library supplies were placed with Office Depot and Demco. Item barcodes were acquired from Minitex. Three new thermal receipt printers for the circulation desks were purchased from Raco Industries. d.New events calendars and business cards for the children’s librarian were printed. e.I began planning for an author event to be held during the adult winter reading program. f.I attended a half-day of the Minnesota Community Education Conference as a representative of the Minnesota Library Association’s Public Library Division.
