Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: October operational report DATE: October 31, 2011 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A.Heating and cooling have been major issues at the Library during the month of October. The new boiler has been problematical in working and has not been correctly coordinated with the overhead heating units and the new thermostats. The radiators which are still regulated by Danfoss valves have not functioned correctly and have produced loud, thumping noises that can only be corrected by turning the appropriate valve. I will be working with Linda Magee, Tim Barnes, and Kevin Hansen to fix the problem. B.The Detex alarm on the south basement emergency exit failed 10/18 and had to be replaced. C.The un-sealed window in the Boardroom was replaced 10/7. D.The copy room floor was tiled 10/12. Thanks to Tim Barnes and Public Works for prepping the room, painting the walls, and coordinating Public Works to move out the furniture. E.The windows were cleaned 10/7. F.Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floor 10/14. G.Orkin performed regularly-scheduled pest inspection 10/27. II. COLLECTION A.Collection development in the adult 600’s is in process. B.Replacement book orders were placed weekly. C.Adult weeding is complete up through 648. D.Four adult paperback orders were placed. E.The periodical collection subscription for 2012 was reviewed and updated. F.Pages are working on cleaning and mending the CD book collection. G.Work is progressing on the low-circulation report sent out by ACL. III. PROGRAMS A.The Library Board met 10/5 with all members in attendance. B.The Friends of the Library met 10/3 at the Dragon House. C.Four sessions of preschool storytime were presented during the month. D.The Library welcomed the new employee tour on 10/13. E.Six classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the Library during the month. F.Four sessions of Read Dogs were held in October. This popular program is funded through the st 21 Century Grant. G.Five sessions of Fall Film Festival were held on Saturdays during the month of October. H.Teen Read Week was celebrated with the theme, “Picture It @ Your Library.” I.Abrakadoodle presented a “Magic Tree House” program on 10/20 during MEA break. J.Renee met with the Adult Book Club 10/26 to discuss Never let me go. K.The Sister City Organization put up a display in honor of Polish/American month for October. L.Four sessions of Baby Read/Baby Grow Storytime were held during the month. M.Mai Kao attended Valley View’s ELL Night 10/4 and the High School’s ELL Night 10/6. She is making valuable contacts with the families in the community and with personnel at ISD #13. N.Mai Kao led the storytime participants in the traditional Halloween costume parade on 10/25. 53 assorted goblins, ghosts, princesses, Spidermen, and witches accompanied the Very Hungry Caterpillar on the parade route. O.Jill Nadeau volunteered 2.5 hours 10/18 to assist with pricing used books for sale. IV.TECHNOLOGY A.CH5 was down for most of the month. A circuit board, which was covered under the warranty, had to be replaced. B.Steve has mounted the key pad for the print release station onto the wall by the coin-op. C.Ramon has worked hard on getting all the Library’s items ready for the new City website. The go-live date has been moved till the end of November. D.Steve changed out the last three of the old receipt printers on 10/19 and 10/20. All public receipt printers now use thermal paper. V.STAFF A.Renee attended the Minnesota Community Education Association Convention representing the Minnesota Library Association on 10/26. B.I attended the budget work session 10/3. C.I attended the ACL Management Team meeting 10/27. D.Ramon started a 35-hour-per-week schedule 10/10 to temporarily cover the Aide hours in the Children’s Department, as well as his own hours. E.I attended a meeting with other building supervisors and NSI/Horwitz 10/24 to discuss their performance under the maintenance contract. F.I attended a workshop at ACL on 10/27 entitled, “Confronting the Future for Public Libraries.” G.Staff attended the insurance informational meetings at City Hall 10/27. H.Ramon attended three days of training on the new CivicPlus website construction 10/4-10/6. VI. FOUNDATION A.The Foundation Board met 10/5 with all members in attendance. The fourth Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser was discussed, and members appreciated the hard work of Tasty Pizza, the Women of Today, and all the volunteers who helped at the dinner. Members were pleased with the changes that had been made since last year. Plans for the fundraiser at the Heights Theatre were discussed. Tickets, flyers, and posters will be printed within the next two weeks for distribution to the members as soon as possible. VII.
