I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A.The windows were washed 9/10.
B.Schindler performed several small updates to the elevator 9/15 to bring it up to current code
specifications. They also performed the yearly pressure tests.
C.Northern Air installed smoke detectors in the ductwork of the HVAC rooftop units 9/19.
D.NSI/Horwitz performed preventive maintenance on the HVAC system the week of 9/22.
E.Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 9/16.
F.Ben Trapskin, Marlene Moulton-Janssen, and Monica Campbell came to the Library to help
select the location to hang the painting purchased for Columbia Heights with Legacy Funds.
The painting will be hung after a dedication ceremony 10/3.
G.The Fire Department conducted the annual building inspection 9/26. No violations were
cited.
H.The stained ceiling tiles were replaced 9/29.
II. COLLECTION
A.Seven hardcover and three paperback orders were placed during the month.
B.Additional copies of best-sellers and adult replacements were ordered.
C.Adult weeding through 639 and fiction CON is complete for the month.
D.Collection development in the adult 400’s was started.
III. PROGRAMS
A.Weekly pre-school story time started 9/20.
B.The Library Board met 9/7 with all members present.
C.A class from Columbia Academy came to the Library for a field trip 9/15.
D.Mai Kao attended the Columbia Academy open house 9/22.
E.The Friends of the Library met 9/12 with 8 members present.
F.Three classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the Library during the month of
9/13.
G.Baby Read/Baby Grow story time started 9/19 and was held weekly on Mondays during the
month.
H.The fall session of Read Dogs started 9/19. All 18 available slots for readers are full and
seeing the dogs and readers interact is amazing. This remarkable program is funded by the

21 Century Grant.
I.Adult Book Club hosted author David Housewright 9/28 in a meeting open to the public.
Mr. Housewright led the discussion on his book, Highway 61.
J.Jill Nadeau volunteered three days during the month to select books on CD and book/CD
combination kits for purchase for the Children’s collection.
IV.TECHNOLOGY
A.The Library Staff welcomes Steve as the new Library IS Technician. We look forward to
working with him.
B.The print manager has experienced ups and downs over the month. The IS Department
installed a numeric keypad on the release station in case the virtual keyboard disappears
from the monitor. I have hopes that the reliability of the system will continue to improve.
V.STAFF
A.Fall schedule for part-time employees started the week of 9/6.
B.Dan Kleinfehn completed his summer temporary assignment as Children’s Department
Assistant on 9/2 and started fall schedule working as a Page again. Thanks to Dan for his
help over the summer with programs and supervision in the Children’s Department.
C.I conducted a brief tour of the Library for new City employees 9/6.
D.Mai Kao Xiong joined the staff 9/13 as the Children’s Librarian. Mai Kao comes to the
Library with a wide range of experience in children’s services and public libraries. She
jumped right in and conducted Baby Read/Baby Grow and pre-school story time the week of
9/19. She has also had experience with Sirsi/Dynix, the Library’s integrated library system
and with the Groupwise e-mail utility.
E.The Library Staff said good-bye to our IS contact, Jesse Hauf, on 9/14. Jesse has been a
great co-worker and supporter of the Library while making the network and hardware the
best they could be. The staff and Library Board wish him well in his future endeavors.
F.Renee attended the City Safety Committee meeting on 9/14.
G.Stacey Hendren celebrated her fourth anniversary with the Library during the month.

H.I attended the 21 Century Grant Board meeting 9/28.
I.Library Supervisor John Brosnahan finished his temporary assignment to select children’s
materials for the print collection on 9/29. Mai Kao will be taking over this task.
VI.FOUNDATION
A.The Foundation Board met 9/1, with 7 members present. Final instructions and preparations
were gone over for the Spaghetti Dinner on 9/7. The event was a success due to the hard
work of the Board and the volunteers from the Friends, the Women of Today, Lotus and
Richard Hubbard, Julienne Wyckoff, and many more. Thanks to everyone for their
contributions.
VII. MISC
A.Delivery switched to four times per week starting 9/12. Patrons are delighted that four-day
delivery service has survived the budget cut-backs.
B.Saturday hours changed to 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. on 9/10.
