Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: June operational report DATE: June 30, 2011 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A.Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 6/17. B.The new public copier was delivered 6/1. It has been a nightmare to have it properly installed with Equitrac, the coin-op, and the print release station. Jesse has been working closely with Loffler to get the problems fixed. C.The Activity Room was painted 6/3 before summer programs began. D.Master Mechanical installed the new metal radiator covers 6/6. E.The new rooftop air conditioning units were delivered 6/15. F.The online workstations and chairs were delivered 6/15. The tabletops are not drilled for placement of the legs and the correct computer shelves are not included, so follow-up with the vendor is proceeding. G.The boiler project continues to be frustrating. The new hot water heater was delivered 6/13 and is still not working. A valve leaked in the ceiling over the Boardroom and water came down into the cabinetry underneath the soffit. Kevin Hansen and Tim Barnes have spent a lot of time with the contractor and NSI to try to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, there is no air conditioning in the Children’s Department and no hot water in the building. H.Heights Electric repaired the exterior spot light on the north side of the building and two exterior security lights. I.The windows were cleaned 6/17. J.The new dehumidifier was delivered 6/22. K.Orkin performed routine maintenance 6/24. II. COLLECTION A.Regular book orders were placed during the month. In addition, an order of replacements and updated editions was placed. B.Adult weeding is completed through Fiction BRI and through 620. C.Collection development in the adult 500’s has been started. D.Review of the periodical subscription list has been started. E.10-day book requests were added weekly. III. PROGRAMS A.Summer Reading Program started 6/1. The metro-wide theme for 2011 is “Bookawocky.” As of 6/21, there were 310 registered as elementary age readers and 109 registered as teens. B.The Friends met 6/6 with 8 members in attendance. The Friends voted to purchase storage containers for the Library’s blueprint collection, a tabletop book display unit, and $600 worth of books on CD with the money they have raised. C.The Library Board met 6/1 with all members in attendance. D.Children’s Movie Matinees were held on 6/13 (“How to train your dragon”), 6/20 (“Nanny McPhee returns”), and 6/27 (“Coraline”). E.A workshop put on my cartoon artist Chad Corrie was held on three consecutive Thursdays in June. F. The 13 summer Volunteens started working the week of 6/13. G.Guest storyteller and theatre artist, Sarah Brown presented three sessions of preschool story time in June. H.“Introduction to Role-Playing Games” was held once in June. I.Three Wacky Wednesdays were held during June: the Teddy Bear Band (6/15), Bill the Juggler (6/22), and Matt Dunn the Magician (6/29). Thanks to Dan Kleinfehn and Shari Alexon for coordinating this program in Marsha’s absence. J.Staff, members of the Friends, the Library Board, and the Foundation Board worked at a booth in front of the Library on 6/24 during the Jamboree Parade to promote library services. We all got to practice our tattoo skills and to meet and greet many people. Thanks to Catherine Vesley, Steve Smith, Rita Norberg, Rita Patterson, Sharon Struss, Gail Olson, Bruce Magnuson, Renee Dougherty, Regina Jesse, and Dan Kleinfehn for all their help. A special thanks to Columbia Heights Rental for supplying us with the great tent. K.The “Design Your Own Superhero” workshop was held on 6/28. L.The Adult Book Club met 6/29 and discussed the book, Every man dies alone. Renee will work with this enthusiastic group to help them choose the titles for their next sessions. IV.TECHNOLOGY A.Jesse is waiting to install the Gates computers until the new furniture is assembled. These computers were purchased with a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Opportunity Hardware program. B.The Legacy Funds program provided funding for a projector, sound system, and Blue-Ray DVD player for CHPL. MELSA used Legacy Funds to purchase a public performance license for certain movies to be shown in member libraries. Marsha used these services to provide the summer Movie Matinee programs on Mondays. V.STAFF A.I attended two Library Management Team meetings in June. B.Summer schedule started 6/13. C.I conducted a brief tour of the Library 6/14 for new City employees. D.Congratulations to Library Page Rukia Sheikh-Mohamed on her graduation from high school. Rukia, who is a former Library Volunteen, will continue her education at St. Thomas in the fall. The staff will take her out to breakfast to celebrate in July. th E.Kelly Olson celebrated her 19 anniversary with the Library during the month. F.Summer schedule started the week of 6/13. G.Library Supervisor John Brosnahan has taken over juvenile selection during Marsha’s leave. He will work every Thursday for three hours to prepare the orders for Kelly to place on Friday’s. John has an extensive background in book publishing and children’s literature, as well as public library work experience. H.Staff continued to attend the MELSA sponsored webinars on WebJunction. I.Three Pages had service anniversaries in June: Regina Jesse, Rukia Sheikh-Mohamed, and Michelle Wermerskirchen. J.I would like to recognize all the hard work the staff has put in to keep services running during Marsha’s prolonged absence. VI.FOUNDATION A.The Foundation Board met 6/18 with 7 members present. The publicity materials for the Spaghetti Dinner were approved as changed and will be ordered from Rapid Graphics. The poster for the August Pancake Breakfast benefit was approved and will be available for distribution as soon as possible. Results of the Linder’s fundraiser are not yet available. Members of the Board will work at the Library booth at the Jamboree 6/24. VII. MISC A.Delivery switched to three days a week for the summer. Saturday delivery will resume after Labor Day. B.Staff would like to recognize Sue Murzyn, 2011 Humanitarian of the Year, for all her support of the Library over the years. Sue has been a long-time member of the Friends and an avid Library supporter since her children were in our pre-school programs. Congratulations to a wonderful person and citizen of Columbia Heights. C.Saturday hours changed to 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on 6/18. These hours will be in effect till the Saturday after Labor Day.
