Rebecca Loader From: Renee Dougherty Subject: May 2011 Operational Report Date: May 25, 2011 I.Programs a.The Friends of the Library met on May 2 and spent their meeting clipping labels in order to take advantage of a double point offer available through May 31. The Campbell’s Labels for Education program provides collection materials and program supplies to schools and libraries who submit product labels. The Friends also helped welcome visitors to “Live at the Library” on May 21. b.Photographer Doug Ohman spoke about the history of libraries in Minnesota and showed photographs from his recent book, Libraries of Minnesota, to a group of fifteen people on Saturday May 7. c.An information session on downloading e-books was provided by Jill Smith on May 18 to an audience of nine people. d.Live at the Library, a celebration of the Arts in the Library, took place on Saturday, May 21. The library hosted the Land of Lakes Choirboys, Ukrainian egg decorator Gail Kishish, string musician Paul Imholte, and watercolorist Joyce Vander Wyst. Approximately 200 people participated. e.At Home Service selected and delivered thirty-four items to six patrons this month. f.Five volunteers contributed fourteen and a half hours of service serving as reading buddies and delivering materials to At Home patrons. g.I assisted Jean Anderson in leading the book group in discussion of Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, a non-fiction account of one family’s experience of Hurricane Katrina. h.The Spring Fling adult movie series concluded this month. Attendance was extremely light for this program. II.Collection Development a.In order to take advantage of a sale of films based on books, I prepared a large DVD order for Baker & Taylor and am awaiting a purchase order before finalizing. b.I also prepared an order of adult music CDs from Baker & Taylor, including some new Broadway cast recordings, classical, and folk music. III.Projects a.The large lobby display continued the display from National Library Week. The slat wall featured fiction by Latino authors. b.I met with the city Safety Committee which continues to review the revised Safety Manual. c.Anoka County Human Services installed a display on child foster care in the adult reading room d.Orders for office and library supplies were placed with Office Depot and Demco. e.I viewed an archived webinar on JobNow, an online job counseling service, and attended training for Ancestry.com provided through MELSA. f.I attended Anoka County Library Staff Day. g.I compiled a list of reference materials to feature on the library’s cable channel. h.With the assistance of participants Kay Reiners and Jung Hee, I presented a brief report of “Buddy Up and Read with a Friend” to the City Council on May 23.
