I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A.Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 5/13.
B.The five ash trees on the Library lot were removed 5/3. They were in bad shape after many
years of cut-throat trimming by Xcel and were in danger from Ash Borers. The contractor
did an excellent job. John Nordlin of Public Works is making a design to complement the
rest of the landscaping at the Library.
C.Replacement of the HVAC rooftop units was approved at the City Council meeting of 5/9.
Thanks to Kevin Hansen, Public Works Director, for all his hard work on this project. The
units should be replaced before the summer air conditioning season is very far progressed.
A pre-con meeting was held with the contractor 5/24.
D.Center Point Energy was notified of a potential emergency gas leak on 5/10 after two
patrons reported a suspicious smell in the back yard of the Library. The responder detected
th
no leaks at the Library, but he informed staff of a large leak at 30 and Stinson Boulevard,
which accounted for the smell.
E.Heights Electric installed outlets for the new copiers 5/11.
F.The mats, blinds, upholstered furniture, and carpeting were cleaned during the month.
G.The old boiler was removed 5/16 and the replacement process started 5/17.
H.The windows were cleaned 5/17.
I.I found the East Room emergency door unlocked during security check before closing on
5/20. The door alarm was also disarmed. Investigation into this incident is still pending.
J.The new departmental Konica copier was delivered 5/23.
K. Dalco performed the annual roof maintenance review 5/25.
L.Public Works has received a grant to replace bike racks in the City. Public Works Intern,
Josie Olson, will be coordinating the units placed at the Library.
II. COLLECTION
A.Four adult paperback orders were placed.
B.Orders for CD’s and DVD’s were placed and received.
C.I completed weeding adult fiction up through A and adult non-fiction up through 599.
Fiction B’s are started, as are the 600’s.
D.Seven book orders were placed and received.
E.The 500’s have been targeted for collection development. Selection for added titles has
started.
III. PROGRAMS
A.The Library Board met 5/4 with eight in attendance.
B.A special event featuring author/photographer Doug Ohman was held 5/7. He discussed his
book, Libraries of Minnesota, and used slides to illustrate his research. The CHPL has two
pictures in his book, which is available for check-out from the circulating collection.
C.Classes from Valley View Elementary School came to the Library for field trips 5/11.
D.The Friends met 5/2 with 9 members present.
E.Jill Smith presented a class on e-books for patrons on 5/18. The attendees were very
enthusiastic about being able to download titles onto their electronic devices.
F.National Children’s Book Week was celebrated 5/2-5/7.
G.The last three adult film programs were held on 5/3, 5/10, and 5/17. Attendance at these
programs was very light.
H.5/14 was the last Saturday delivery until after Labor Day. Delivery will remain on Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday for the summer.
I.The adult book group discussed Zeitoun at the meeting 5/25.
J.Three classes from ICS visited the Library during the month.
K.Anoka County Foster Care provided a display in the Adult Reading Room for the month of
May.
L.“Live at the Library” was held 5/21 with four artists booked at COH. The Land of Lakes
Boys Choir, Paul Imholte (string musician), Joyce (watercolor artist), and Gail (Ukainian
egg decorator) drew about 280 people into the Library. Renee and her two Legacy aides did
an excellent job of coordinating the event. Representatives from the Friends, the Library
Board, and the Foundation Board were on hand to meet and greet the attendees.
M.Kelly and Dan met with the Volunteens 5/26 for orientation for the summer season.
N.Renee and participants in the Friends’ “Buddy Up and Read” program made a presentation
to the City Council at their meeting on 5/23.
IV.TECHNOLOGY
A.Jesse has the new departmental Konica copier working on the City network, so that all staff
computers can print, copy, and scan in color and black/white from our desks. The public
copier has not been received yet.
B.Jesse has submitted the IS proposed 2012 budget requests for the Library.
C.The workstations were not delivered in time to have the Gates computers installed in May.
Hopefully, they will arrive the first week in June, so that the new computers can be installed
before summer session starts.
D.The roll-out of Office 2010 on the public computers has come off without any
complications. Thanks to Jesse for obtaining the grant for the Library to be able to offer
these programs to the public.
V.STAFF
A.Lauren Gutkaes has returned from college out of state and will be returning to the regular
Page schedule.
B.Staff continued to attend the webinars on the WorkForce Center and working with small
businesses during the month.
C.I attended two Management Team meetings at the County in May.
D.I proctored a test 5/10.
E.Renee attended the City Safety Committee meeting 5/11.
F.Staff attended All Staff Day at Bunker Hills Activity Center 5/12.
G.I attended a presentation on Sirsi/Dynix’s Director’s Station 5/18.
H.I met with Tim Barnes, Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, 5/19 about maintenance projects
coming up at the Library.
I.I met with the Pages 5/24 to negotiate summer schedule. Kelly went over Summer Reading
Club procedures with them.
J.I attended a demonstration of Collection HQ 5/25 at ACL.
K.Renee attended a workshop on Ancestry (electronic database) at the Roseville library 5/25.
L.Stacey, Kelly, and Cristy participated in training on the new departmental copier 5/26.

VI.FOUNDATION
A.The Foundation Board met 5/11 with all members present. The Board welcomed newly-
appointed member, Gail Olson, to her first meeting.
B.A fundraiser was held over the week-end of Mother’s Day at Linder’s with 15% of the total
pre-tax purchase of people presenting a printed coupon being donated to the Foundation.
C.Foundation Board members were enthusiastic hosts at “Live at the Library” on 5/21.
D.The Library Foundation received many generous memorials in honor of long-time patron,
Muriel McClellan.

A.A MELSA crossover survey was conducted the week of 5/2.
