Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: April operational report DATE: April 30, 2011 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. The windows were cleaned 4/21. B. Orkin performed routine pest maintenance in the building 4/19. C. The fire extinguishers were serviced 4/21. D. Public Works performed many maintenance projects around the building during the month. Staff appreciates their dependability and ability to fix so many types of broken items. E. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floor 4/8. F. The coupling on one of the Library’s sump pumps sprung a leak 4/17. Thanks to the early discovery by the custodian, the repair was completed quickly and no damage was done to any building contents. G. The boiler was shut down 4/27 in preparation for asbestos abatement and removal of the old boiler. The new boiler will be installed after 4/28. The project is funded in part by a Federal stimulus grant. H. Quotations for replacing the rooftop HVAC units are being gathered. I. The blinds were picked up 4/28 for cleaning. II. COLLECTION A. Weekly orders were placed for items with requests. B. Weekly orders were placed for items from current selection tools. C. One adult paperback order was placed. D. DVD and cd orders were placed. E. Collection development area: working on adult 500’s. F. Weeding of the adult fiction was completed through the letter Z. Adult nonfiction weeding was completed through 613. III. PROGRAMS A. The Friends met 4/4 at the Dragon House Café. Kudos to them for the successful completion of their project, “Love Your Library,” which collected funds to replace worn out and missing items in the circulating collection. Over $1,000 was collected during the month of March. B. The Library Board met 4/6 with 7 people in attendance. C. Barbara Tantanella, Library Boardmember, represented the Library at the Valley View Carnival on 4/1. D. Four sessions of Read Dogs were held during the month. E. National Library Week was celebrated 4/11-16 with the theme “Create Your Own Story at the Library.” The Library Board accepted a proclamation in honor of National Library Week from Mayor Peterson at the City Council meeting of 4/11. F. The bulk loan for the schools was picked up 4/21. G. Four sessions of Baby Read/Baby Grow Storytime were held during the month. Marsha is conducting the program in cooperation with ECFE personnel. H. The Spring Fling movie series featured ”Notting Hill,” “Legally Blonde,” and “She’s All That” during the month of April. This program was presented through the use of Legacy Funds. I. “Buddy Up With a Friend,” sponsored by the Friends and the Library, gained another participant in April. People who want to practice reading can sign up for the program at the Library. J. Tax season ended quietly. Adequate forms and instructions were available for the public. As more people are e-filing, the program is becoming calmer and easier to manage. K. Renee provided the display for the case at City Hall for the month of April. L. The adult book group discussed The good thief at their meeting on 4/27. M. Two classes of students from ICS visited the Library during the week of 4/11-15. N. Three sessions of preschool storytime were held 4/5, 4/12, and 4/19. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Preparations for the arrival of the new copy machines are nearly complete. The public machine will include a print manager which will serve all the public computer workstations. B. Furniture for the new public terminals purchased with Year 2 of the Gates Grant has been ordered. Estimated arrival is the week of 5/31. Jesse Hauf, the Library’s IS guru, has obtained a grant that will enable Office Suite 2010 to be loaded on all the Library’s public computers. This feature will be rolled out when the new public terminals are installed. V. STAFF A. Marsha attended a HA meeting 4/26. B. I participated in a webinar on “Floating Collection” on 4/12. C. I attended the City Image Committee meeting 4/5. D. Renee Dougherty completed her first year as a City and Library employee on 4/12. E. Renee attended the City’s Safety Committee meeting 4/13. F. Renee participated in a webinar on “Streaming Videos” on 4/19. G. Nancy participated in a webinar on “Cooperative Ventures with Your WorkForce Center” 4/20. This is one of the MELSA sponsored webinars offered through WebJunction. Elaine took the webinar on 4/25, Renee took it 4/26, and I took it 4/27. H. I attended the Public Service meeting at Northtown 4/28. I. I attended three Management Team meetings at ACL during the month. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 4/13 with 8 members present. Members discussed the fundraiser being sponsored through Linder’s on May 6-9. The Foundation will receive 15% of all pre-tax sales made on those dates. VII. MISC A. The Library participated in the national tornado drill on 4/14 as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week. 15 people participated at 1:45 p.m. B. I proctored four tests for long-distance learners during the month. C. I met with new Library Boardmember Steve Smith on 4/27. Steve comes to the Board with a wide background of experience in planning, finance, and public service. D. I am very proud to recognize four Library Pages for their years of service: Alicia Cermak, Regina Jesse, Dan Kleinfehn, and Nick Olberding have each worked ten years at the Library. Kudos! E. I would like to emphasize the excellent job my staff does the whole year round. In these times of “doing more with less,” everyone is stepping up to the plate to do the work necessary to provide excellent service to the patrons. 4/21 is Administrative Professionals Day, but I would like to extend the recognition to everyone who works for the Library.
