Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: March operational report DATE: March 31, 2011 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUPIMENT A. The windows were cleaned 3/24. B. National tested the sprinkler system 3/2. C. Firenet came out 3/16 to replace a broken valve on the sprinkler system. They were unable to complete the repair. D. An asbestos test was performed on the boiler 3/31. E. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 3/11. F. NSI/Horwitz performed routine maintenance on the HVAC systems 3/21. II. COLLECTION A. Five book orders were placed and received. Two adult paperback book orders were placed and received. DVD and music CD orders were placed and received. B. Pages are working on repairing the adult paperback books. C. Adult weeding is complete through Fiction Z (Science Fiction and Western). Weeding of the adult nonfiction is complete up through 584. III. PROGRAMS A. Three classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the Library during the week of 3/7-10. Three classes also visited the Library during the week of 3/28-31. B. The Friends met 3/7 with 9 members present. C. The Library Board met 3/2 with eight members in attendance. D. Five films were shown as part of the After-School Matinee program during the month. This program was provided through the use of Legacy Monies. E. Teen Tech Week was celebrated 4/7-4/12. F. Two ECFE classes came to the Library for field trips on 3/9. G. Two sessions of preschool story time were held during the month. H. MacPhail presented a special “Sing, Play, Learn” program on 3/29. I. Baby Read/Baby Grow storytime started 3/28. J. The Friends special project, “Love Your Library,” started 3/1 and ran through 3/31. Staff is thrilled with the response from the patrons to replace lost, damaged, and missing materials in the circulating collection. Huzzah to the Friends! K. The Adult Book Club met 3/30 to discuss Animal, vegetable, miracle. L. Kids Read/Dogs Listen started again on 3/21. Two teams are totally scheduled for the available times. Marsha has located another reading team and will be working them into the program. . IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Phase II of the Gates grant is in process. Jesse has selected the machines and has enough funds to purchase four new computers for the Children’s Department. This purchase will raise the total count of public Internet computers to 8 and public catalog workstations to 3. Staff is very excited about having new machines for the public to use. The Library’s furniture company, Buckstaff, has declared bankruptcy, so Stacey has been working with our furniture representative to find a comparable vendor to supply the needed online tables and chairs. Public Works crews (Kelly, Tim, and Adam) and Jesse have been able to adjust the arrangement of a wall and shelving to accommodate the new machines. The matching money for the grant is being raised through sales from the Book Sale Cart and the Library’s technology budget. V. STAFF A. Marsha attended a Heighten the Arts meeting 3/29. B. I attended the Image Committee meeting 3/3. C. I proctored 3 exams during the month. D. Stacey attended copier demos 3/3. E. Stacey attended Tightrope training 3/4. F. Renee attended the City Safety Committee meeting 3/9. G. I met with Linda Magee and Bill Elrite 3/18 about building maintenance issues. H. I helped judge the Sister City writing contest on 3/29. I. Ramon Gomez completed his fourth year of service as a Library Clerk and his ninth year of working for the Library. st J. Marsha and I met with Linda Ernst 3/30 about the 21 Century Grant programs. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 3/9 with five members present. Preparations were made for the Linder’s fundraiser coming up in May. VII. MISCELLANEOUS A. Major Projects a. State version of the 2010 annual report b. City version of the 2010 annual report c. Staff scheduling B. I served as one of the judges for the Sister Cities essay contest this year. Winners of the local contest go on to compete on the national level. I proctored two tests this month. I am keeping track of how many I do now that Hennepin and Anoka County Libraries are no longer providing this service.
