A.REQUEST TO INSTALL STOP SIGNS AT THE INTERSECTION OF 52 AVENUE
TH
AND 5 STREET
thth
Ms Marie Holmberg of 5132 4 Street NE has requested stop signs at the intersection of 5
nd
Street and 52 Avenue. Ms Holmberg’s concern is the safety of the intersection as it is the
only uncontrolled intersection in the area. Ms Holmberg’s letters are attached.
Visibility at the intersection is good; southbound traffic has a partially obstructed view because
of shrubs at the corner.
Police Chief Nadeau researched the accident history at this intersection and surrounding
intersections for two blocks. The information is shown on the table below.

The total number of accidents at the intersection of 5 Street and 52 Avenue is low, however,
there have been more accidents at this intersection compared to other intersections in the area.
All other intersections are controlled by two-way stop signs. Motorists may be anticipating a
controlled intersection because of the surrounding intersections. Staff recommends two-way
nd
stop signs be installed, stopping traffic on 52 Avenue.
RECOMMENDED MOTION: Move to call a public hearing to install stop signs at the
thndnd
intersection of 5 Street and 52 Avenue, stopping traffic on 52 Avenue.

B. REQUEST TO INSTALL DEAF/BLIND PERSON SIGNS ON 41 AVENUE, 42
RD
AVENUE AND 43 AVENUE
st
Mr Tom Erickson resides at 873 41 Avenue (Columbia Court). Mr Erickson is deaf and
considered legally blind. Mr Erickson met with Fire Chief Gorman and myself prior to the
Traffic Commission meeting in April. Mr Erickson’s concerns were the emergency vehicle
strd
traffic on 41 Avenue and the unsafe walking conditions on 43 Avenue due to traffic
generated by the Rainbow Food store. Mr Erickson is requesting “Deaf/Blind Person” signs on
stndrd
41 Avenue, 42 Avenue and 43 Avenue.
The north south street adjacent to Columbia Court is a private street. City staff considers
stnd
“Deaf/Blind Person” signs on 41 Avenue and 42 Avenue appropriate. A more generic sign
rd
for 43 Avenue, such as “Watch for Pedestrians”, may be more suitable.
st
RECOMMENDED MOTION: Move to install “Deaf/Blind Person Area” signs on 41 Avenue
ndrd
and 42 Avenue and “Watch for Pedestrians” signs on 43 Avenue.
