Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: January operational report DATE: January 28, 2011 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A.The new fire panel has been installed and activated for monitoring. Thanks to Chief Gorman for all his help with the project. B.January was the first month of having an in-house custodian. Staff is still working on responsibility assignments and clarification of procedures. C.Public Works Director Kevin Hansen brought various contractors to examine the Library’s boiler, which is scheduled for replacement in 2011. The boiler is original to the 1965 addition to the building. D.Heights Electric replaced two ballasts in the Children’s Department 1/18. E.Firenet activated the Library’s new fire panel 1/19. The building is now monitored for fire safety. F.Stacey and I met on 1/18 to analyze where the print manager and copier project has stalled. Staff will be contacting the vendors who had responded to inquiries about their proposals. G.Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 1/14. H.The contract has been signed for Schindler Elevator to install an escutcheon hole on the main floor elevator door and an ADA approved telephone in the elevator car. II. COLLECTION A.A “catch-up” book order from 2010 was placed in January. New standing orders and renewed standing orders have all started on time. B.I am in the process of weeding the reference section. I am also working on the 500’s. Collection development will be done in the 500’s after the weeding is completed. C.The Pages have been working on repairing the ragged tape on the adult paperback labels. D.Overdrive’s go-live date was 1/20. The availability of e-books has been eagerly awaited. 244 items were checked out on the first day. Thanks to Monica Campbell of ACL for all her hard work on this project. III. PROGRAMS A.The Library Board met 1/5 with 6 in attendance. The Board welcomed City Council Member Tami Diehm as the guest Council liaison until a permanent member is appointed. B.Granny’s Closet picked up their collection box early in the month. They received a variety of donated items. C.The Friends met January 3 with eight members present. The Friends discussed their “Share the Love” project and made preparations for setting up a display. D.Two classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the Library during their regularly scheduled times the week of January 10. E.“Snowmen at Night” was presented by Abrakadoodle on 1/14. F.The bulk loan was picked up by the school 1/6. G.Winter Jackets Reading Club started 1/10. As of 1/26, fifteen people have submitted reviews to be included in the display in the lobby. Renee Dougherty is coordinating the program. H.Renee led the Adult Book Club in a discussion of Methland on 1/26. I.Due to the December changes in the tax law, the tax forms are not yet available. The IRS is not sending out any paper forms to individuals for tax year 2010, so I expect the demand to be high for those people who are not interested in e-filing. J.The winter session of preschool story time started 1/18. IV.TECHNOLOGY A.I am working with Jesse on year 2 of the Gates Grant. There is enough funding to replace all the public access workstations in the Children’s Department. B.Judy Soule rolled over the book orders so that Kelly could set up the funds and start ordering for 2011. C.The Library’s new cable equipment has arrived and has been installed. The television in the lobby will allow patrons to see the Library’s cable channel and select video clips. As part of the package, the Library received a digital video camera and tripod, which may be used by all the City departments. D.Comcast suffered a major breakdown on 1/20, and the Library was up and down for two days. With the loss of the ILS, staff had to do circulation offline, and the load of the data errored out. Jesse is working with Comcast and ACL to resolve both issues. V.STAFF A.On 1/4, a Library Science student interviewed me for a class assignment about the future of libraries. B.I attended two meetings of the City Image Committee on 1/5 and 1/25. Pat Proft, Columbia Heights native, brainstormed with the Committee on 1/5 with ideas on marketing and highlighting the positive aspects of the City. C.Stacey received training through Unique Management on 1/11. Unique Management is a revenue recovery company that has been retained by the Library to pursue patrons in Collections. I will be adding a Unique Management update to my monthly operational report. The 3.12% return on the first submittal is within the range Unique expects. D.Renee attended the City Safety Committee meeting on 1/12. The Committee is going to work on a lock-down procedures manual for all the departments. E.Marsha attended a “Heighten the Arts” meeting 1/25. th F.Marsha celebrated her 17 year as Children’s Librarian in January. G.Stacey attended training on Tightrope and Carousel, the new cable software programs, on 1/19 and 1/20. H.Kelly compiled the sales tax data for the Library’s annual filing. I.I attended the Public Service meeting at ACL 1/27. J.Reference staff took the first of a series of webinars sponsored by MELSA on Web Junction concerning current issues for librarians. The first webinar dealt with issues concerning unemployment insurance. VI. FOUNDATION A.The Foundation Board met 1/4 with 8 members present. Members discussed doing another Linders fundraiser and approaching Sarna’s with a proposal for a donation. Treasurer Sharon Shedlov gave a year-end accounting report. There will be no meeting in February. VII.
