BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MINUTES
January 5, 2011
The meeting was called to order by Chair Patricia Sowada, at 6:34 p.m. Members present were: Nancy Hoium,
Patricia Sowada, and Catherine Vesley. Also present: City Council Representative Tami Diehm, Becky Loader,
and Stacey Hendren. Not present: Barbara Tantanella and Lynette Thomson.
The minutes of the December 1, 2010, Board meeting were approved as mailed.
The bill list dated 12/13/10 was reviewed. It was moved, seconded and passed that the bills be paid.
The bill list dated 12/15/10 was reviewed. It was moved, seconded and passed that the bills be paid.
The bill list dated 12/22/10 was reviewed. It was moved, seconded and passed that the bills be paid.
The bill list dated 12/29/10 was reviewed. It was moved, seconded and passed that the bills be paid.
The bill list dated 1/10/11 was reviewed. It was moved, seconded and passed that the bills be paid.
The 2010 accounting dated 1/6/11 was reviewed.
The bill list dated 1/10/11 was reviewed. It was moved, seconded and passed that the bills be paid.
The 2011 accounting dated 1/6/11 was reviewed.
Old Business:
1. The 2011 accounting page reflects the approved budget. All proposed 2011 budget items were approved,
along with carryovers for the boiler, air conditioning and copier replacements. Improvements to the
Boardroom in 2011 will include new cupboards for the Historical Society collection and a workstation for
the new cable equipment. Loader will be working with Tim Barnes, maintenance supervisor, to replace
the sink and toilets in the women’s restroom.
2. The Fidelity Cleaning contract terminated on 12/30/10 and in-house cleaning has commenced. Loader is
working with Barnes to create procedures and contracts for 2011 maintenance.
3. The Board was pleased with the new carpeting in the Boardroom.
New Business:
1. Loader presented a transfer request.
Motion: To authorize the transfer of $660 from line item 2020 to line item 2011. The motion was
seconded and passed.
2. Crossover statistics for October and November were distributed to the Board.

3. The target date for unveiling Overdrive and eBook availability at Anoka County Libraries is January 11.
Patrons are responding well to promotions for the new service and asking a lot of questions. The
collection will continue to be expanded on a regular basis.
4. The City is preparing a procedure for making closing announcements on WCCO.

Items from the Floor:
1. Promotional magnets displaying the Library’s hours and contact information were distributed to the
Board. These magnets are being handed out at the desk and will be used for promotional purposes in the
coming months.
2. The North Extra section of the Star/Tribune contained an article about the Library in the January 6, 2011
edition of the paper. Loader was contacted concerning an expansion article after a mention of the
dormant local historical society article done in December. Loader was interviewed by Maria Elena Baca,
and was very impressed by her professionalism. Baca verified all information and interviewed Mayor
Gary L. Peterson, and Foundation President Marlaine Szurek for the article as well. The Board discussed
the article and their desire to thank the reporter for her interest and skill.
3. Hendren printed a copy of the updated Minnesota Public Library Trustee Handbook. One copy will be
kept at the Library for use and review by Board members.
4. Sowada requested an update on a generator purchase. Loader will be working with Barnes and pursuing
grant funding.
5. Hoium notified the Board that school editions of Huck Finn will be printed with updated language.
Offensive language that deters teachers from teaching the book will be replaced. The Board discussed
Huck Finn and Mark Twain’s recently published biography.
6. The Board discussed the Library’s inability to screen or inhibit the movie checkouts of minors. It is the
responsibility of parents to supervise their child’s library use.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:29 p.m.
