Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: November operational report DATE: November 30, 2010 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. A dastardly mouse was spotted in my office 11/1. Orkin dealt with the little beast. B. The public copier was repaired 11/4. The door on the end of the copier broke 11/19. A replacement has been ordered. C. Caulking was applied around the new emergency door 11/4. D. Alta Blinds came to repair a broken blind 11/8. E. The men’s restroom was vandalized with bad graffiti. It has all been removed. F. Xerox presented a demo of their print manager system 11/10. G. The boiler was not working 11/16. NSI discovered that the switch was in the off position. Heat was restored in a timely manner. H. Tim removed the old tower brackets from the online workstations 11/22. The new PC’s have all the hard drives mounted behind the monitors now. I. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 11/12. II. COLLECTION A. Preparation of year-end book, paperback book, DVD, and CD orders is in process. All materials paid for with 2010 funding must be received by December 31. B. Adult weeding is complete through 359 and through the end of the compact discs. The Pages have been mending many pages and replacing torn book covers as the weeding proceeds through the nonfiction. Thanks to Ramon and Stacey for assisting me with the weeding. C. I reviewed the large print standing orders and updated them for 2011. III. PROGRAMS A. The Library Board met 11/3 with 8 members in attendance. B. The Friends of the Library met 11/1 with 7 members present. C. The Friends are helping to collect books for Project Bookshelf. These items will be distributed through the local Southern Anoka County Action (SACA) food shelf. D. Three sessions of preschool story time were held during the month. E. Read Dogs continued through 11/15. Participants were also able to read to a cat, Spooner, during the session. This popular program is funded in part by a grant from the Minnesota st Department of Education using Federal funding, CFDA 84.287c, 21 Century Community Learning Centers. F. Four different groups from Headstart visited the Library for special programs 11/17 and 11/18. G. The Library hosted a Legacy event 11/20. “Just Before Sleep,” a youth performance on homelessness, was attended by 39 people. Staff had many comments on the skill of the young actors and the power of their message. H. The Adult Book Club held a discussion on Elegance of the hedgehog 11/24. I. Two classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the Library during the week of 11/1. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Ch. 1 has experienced several problems. Jesse tested it at a different location and re- installed it back in the public line of PC’s. If it has problems again, the network card will be replaced. V. STAFF A. Marsha attended a meeting at the School District 11/9 for the Heighten the Arts group. B. Marsha attended the MacPhail workshop at the Mississippi branch of ACL on 11/3. C. I attended two Management Team meeting at ACL during the month. D. Marsha attended Groupwise 8 training 11/16. E. Renee toured the Adult Education facility on Central Avenue 11/16. She was able to observe several different class levels. F. Renee attended Groupwise 8 training 11/17. G. I participated in the interviews for the new part-time Custodian I position in the City 11/23. I joined Tim Barnes, Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, and Keith Windschitl, Recreation Director, on the panel. H. Kelly and I attended a meeting on the Employee of the Year nominations 11/29. I. I will attend a webinar on “Boopsie” 11/30. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 11/3 with eight members present. Final plans were made for the 12/5 fundraiser at the Heights Theatre. The First Four will sing at 1 p.m. and the movie, th “Miracle on 34 Street” will be shown at 1:30 p.m. VII. MISC A. A MELSA crossover survey was conducted 11/15-11/20. B. Anoka County put up a display on homeless awareness for the month of November. C. The Library lost power at 4:15 p.m. on 11/23. Power was estimated to be off for at least two hours, so the part-time staff was sent home at 5:15 p.m. and the building was closed to the public. Marsha was trapped in the elevator for about two hours. The Fire Department could not get the door open, so Schindler Elevator was called. The service person was able to manually drain the oil out of the hydraulics and lower the car by hand to let her out. Power was not restored till 6:20 p.m., and the Library remained closed for the evening. Kudos to Renee Dougherty and the staff for their swift response to a difficult situation. D. Major projects: a.
