On October 5, Minnesota author Michele Hauf spoke to a group of three guests about writing paranormal romances and fantasy fiction. b. The Friends of the Library met on October 4 at the Dragon House restaurant. The group is currently volunteering with the Buddy Up and Read program. c. The At-Home-Service delivered forty-six items to five patrons in October. d. In October, volunteers donated fourteen hours of service, spending six hours delivering books to At Home patrons and eight hours serving as reading buddies. e. The book discussion group met to discuss Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann on October 27. The group continues to pick challenging titles and discuss books with candor, vast diversity of opinion, and civility. II. Collection a. A large DVD order was placed with Baker and Taylor this month. The order included many documentaries, newer adult feature films, and children’s videos. b. The remainder of the funds budgeted for spoken word CDs in 2010 were expended this month. Two orders, to Random House/Books on Tape and Baker and Taylor, added a variety of fiction and non-fiction titles and some of the titles that will be read by the book group in the coming year. III. Projects a. I attended the 2010 Minnesota Library Association conference in Rochester on October 6-8. b. On October 13, I attended the meeting of the city Safety Committee where we completed our review and revision of the safety manual. c. I toured the Anoka county Workforce Center on October 19, met coordinator Tracy Rohlof, and received an overview of services and resources for job seekers. d. I placed orders with Demco for audiovisual collection supplies and Office Depot for general building maintenance supplies. e. The regular cleaner has resigned and Fidelity cleaning service has assigned a new cleaner for the building. f. The displays in the lobby include “A library card is the smartest card in your wallet” and “romances with bite” on the slat board display.
