Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: October operational report DATE: October 30, 2010 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Public Works performed several small maintenance jobs and checked the water leaking into the Activity Room on 10/1. B. NSI/Horwitz cleaned the air conditioning/heating unit on the east side of the building 10/4. C. Xcel repaired the east parking lot light on 10/8. D. Xcel trimmed the trees on the east side of the building on 10/8. E. A mouse was spotted in the Adult Reading Room 10/15. Orkin responded to take care of the invading critter. F. R.W. Ceilings and Walls did touch-up painting on the exterior wood cap 10/22. G. The windows were cleaned 10/1. II. COLLECTION A. Collection development and replacement book orders are in process. B. Adult weeding is complete up to Fiction T and through 359. C. Two adult paperback orders were placed. D. The periodical collection subscription for 2011 was reviewed and updated. E. Work continues on cleaning the compact disc collection. III. PROGRAMS A. The Library Board met 10/6 with eight members and one guest in attendance. B. The Friends of the Library met 10/4 at the Dragon House. C. Four sessions of preschool storytime were presented during the month. D. Local author Michele Hauf presented a program entitled “Love With Bite” on 10/5. E. The Minnesota Voter Education Workshop scheduled for 10/9 was cancelled when no participants showed up. F. Two classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the Library during the week of 10/11. G. Five sessions of Read Dogs and Read Cats were held in October. H. The After-School Film Festival was held 10/7 and 10/14. I. Teen Read Week was celebrated 10/18-10/23 with the theme, “Books With Beat.” J. The first Wii gaming program on 10/20 was a big success! K. The “Create a Dragon” program on 10/21 and 10/22 drew an enthusiastic crowd of participants. L. Renee met with the Adult Book Club 10/27 to discuss Let the great world spin. M. The Sister City Organization put up a display in honor of Polish/American month for October. N. Four sessions of Baby Read/Baby Grow Storytime were held during the month. O. A special holiday storytime was presented 10/28. P. Marsha led the storytime participants in the traditional “Monster Mash” parade on 10/26. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Comcast replaced the Library’s modem 10/7. B. Stacey was trained to use the Evanced calendar 10/15. The Library’s programs will now be included on a calendar on the Anoka County Library’s website. There is also a link from the City’s website to the Evanced calendar. C. The CybraryN reports locked on 10/21, so that the queue would not come up. Jesse was able to manually delete them soon after opening. V. STAFF A. Marsha attended the ELL open houses at the High School and Valley View. B. Renee attended the Minnesota Library Association annual conference in Rochester 10/6-10/8. C. Becky attended the budget work session 10/12. D. Renee attended a meeting of the City Safety Committee 10/13. E. Renee toured the Anoka County WorkForce Center 10/19. F. Renee Dougherty celebrated her six-months anniversary of working at the Library during the month. G. Becky attended the Public Service meeting 10/28 at RUM. H. Ramon completed the design for new staff business cards. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 10/20 with four members in attendance. The third Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser was discussed, and members praised the hard work of Todd, who donated all the spaghetti from Tasty Pizza. Several changes will be made behind the scenes for next year’s event. Plans for the fundraiser at the Heights Theatre were discussed. Tickets, flyers, and posters will be printed within the next two weeks for distribution to the members on November 3. VII. MISC A. I would like to recognize the extra effort my staff put forth during my absences from the office in September and October. Kudos to you all! B. Major projects: a. Proposed 2011 budget b.
