I. PROGRAMS
Summer Reading Program cam to a close on August 31. Registration for the 2010

programs was the highest registration recorded since 1967 with 905 children
participating. The elementary program which included preschool through grade five
had a total of 674 participants with 46% attending school in Columbia Heights.
Preschools made up 22% of the registrations leaving 32% of the participants coming
from outside the local school district. The teen program which included grades 6
through senior in high school had a total of 231 participants with 48% of the
participants coming from Columbia Heights Central Middle School or Columbia
Heights High School. It was a very busy and successful summer.

The summer session of R. E. A. D. dogs (funded through 21 Century grant monies)

came to a close. This program is very popular with both adults and children.
C. American Girl was again a big hit. Abrakadoodle supplied this year’s craft portion which
was a huge timesaver for the staff. Forty-Two participants wove baskets in the style of the
Native American Perce Indians and samples foods related to the Perce diet.
D. Summer Volunteens were recognized for their contributions on August 24. We had 8
outstanding volunteers this summer. The contribution of their time is greatly appreciated.
E. I attended two community picnics with the Library Director and the Adult Services
Specialist. The picnics were arranged by the police department and were successful in my
estimation. I look forward to seeing them continue and grow in future years.
II. COLLECTION
A. Juvenile weeding is completed up through E 920; J and YA fiction through S and YA
paperbacks
B. Several book orders were placed. I am now caught up to June 2010 in the selection tools.
C. With help from the evening supervisors, I am reviewing the Juvenile and YA magazine
collection titles for potential changes
D. Nancy Soldatow has been aiding in collection development of the EJ fiction section.
III. STAFF
A. Staff attended all staff day along with ACL staff on August 27. The was full of
informational programs and offered a great chance to network with others within the
County system
B. Staff received training on how to use fire extinguished from the Fire Department on 8/19
and 8/23. We all passed with flying colors.
