Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: August operational report DATE: August 30, 2010 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. The windows were cleaned 8/5. B. NS/I Horwitz replaced the thermocoupler in the hot water heater 8/10. C. Stacey and I went to the Mississippi branch of ACL 8/12 to see a demonstration on their public print manager in preparation for replacing the public copier and printers. D. The new server was installed at the Library 8/12. E. The Library’s beautiful new parking lot debuted 8/16. Thanks to Kevin Hansen for all his help in bringing this project to a successful close. F. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 8/20. G. RW Ceilings and Walls painted the exterior wooden cap on the building 8/27. H. The cracks around the stucco panels and around the 1965 addition to the building were caulked 8/27. I. Stacy attended a copier demonstration 8/31. II. COLLECTION A. Three paperback and six hardcover book orders were placed during the month. Orders for dvd’s and music cd’s were also placed. B. Adult weeding is completed up through Fiction S and 320. A large number of replacements for lost copies were ordered. C. I reviewed book standing orders for changes in 2011. D. A Large Print order was placed to supplement the Library’s standing orders. E. The periodical collection was reviewed for dead run issues and correct box labels. III. PROGRAMS A. Summer Reading Program ended 8/31. The themes for 2010 were “Make a Splash @ Your Library” and “Make Waves@ Your Library.” st B. The summer session of Read Dogs ended 8/9. This popular program was funded by the 21 Century Grant. C. The American Girl Party 8/11 featured Kaya and was put on by Abracadoodle. D. Larry Yazzi, Native American dancer, put on a special program 8/4. E. Renee, Marsha, and I attended the Community Picnics in the Parks on 8/16 and 8/18. City departments had the opportunity to provide information about services in an informal setting with the citizens. Thanks to Terry Nightingale for his hard work in organizing the picnics. F. Renee conducted two tours for Adult Education Center students on 8/17 and 8/23. G. Renee met with the Adult Book Club 8/25 to discuss Wildflower. H. The Library Board met 8/4 with all members in attendance. I. The Summer Volunteens were recognized for all their hard work at a reception in their honor 8/24. Library Board Member Barbara Tantanella presented them with a certificate and small gift. J. The new teachers in Independent School District #13 visited the Library 8/25. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. SIRSI /DYNIX had a major upgrade on 8/18. The new client for WorkFlows was installed 8/27. B. The intended migration to Microsoft from Novell did not go as anticipated the week of 8/16. The next scheduled time is the week-end of 9/11-12. V. STAFF A. Marsha and I met with the Pages 8/24 to negotiate Fall schedule. B. Stacey Hendren celebrated her third anniversary as the Clerk-Typist II (Adult) in August. C. Pages Lauren Gutkaes and Aaron Mattson returned to college part-way through the month. They worked a lot of vacation shifts for other Pages over the summer. D. I participated in the interview panel for the new Facility Maintenance Supervisor position at the City. The new person will be in charge of maintenance and repair for all City buildings. E. Staff received training on how to use fire extinguished from the Fire Department on 8/19 and 8/23. Thanks to Chief Gorman for arranging the training. F. Eight staff members attended All-Staff Day at Bunker Hills Activity Center 8/27. Staff is very pleased to be included in the county-wide event. G. Stacey participated in the final production of the “Heights Calendar Show” 8/26. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 8/4 with five members present. Publicity materials for the Spaghetti dinner have been ordered and will be distributed 8/19. Final planning and details were discussed. The fundraiser at the Heights Theatre in December was discussed, and the Board decided to not hold a silent auction this year. VII. MISC A. Major projects: a. Budget work b.
