The Friends of the Library met on June 7, 2010. Members of the Friends served as goodwill ambassadors during ‘Live at the Library’ on June 5; continued to serve as reading partners for adult learners through the Buddy Up and Read program; and planned to publicize their service work during the city Jamboree Parade on June 25 but were rained out. b. Four At Home service patrons borrowed fifty-five items this month. The brochure describing the program was revised and updated. c. Volunteers contributed twenty-four hours of service in June. One new volunteer straightened reference, readied items for the sale cart, and prepared a batch of donated CD cases for use. Three volunteers delivered items to At Home patrons and four volunteers read weekly with the Buddy Up and Read program. d. The book group discussed Tim O’Brien’s Going After Cacciato. e. Live at the Library was enthusiastically attended on Saturday, June 5. Straighten Up and Fly Right: An Unforgettable Tribute to Nat King Cole was presented in the Activity Room and woodcarver Lee Olson demonstrated his technique and carvings in the adult reading room. f. The Love in the Afternoon film fest was held on four consecutive Tuesdays. The classic romantic comedies It Happened One Night, Grand Hotel, Philadelphia Story, and Sabrina were shown. Attendance ranged from 5-8 persons each week. II. Collection a. A DVD order was placed with Baker and Taylor this month. It included new adult and children’s feature films, adult non-fiction health and travel videos, and replacement copies of classic movies previously held on VHS. In addition, a few donated feature films were added. III. Projects a. Library Board, Friends, Foundation, and staff planned an informational kiosk for the Jamboree parade. They hoped to promote library services and connect with patrons. Heights Rental generously donated the use of two tent canopies. Unfortunately, severe weather necessitated cancellation of the parade. b. Fidelity cleaning service did a walkthrough of the facility and made recommendations regarding the men’s restroom, which were implemented. c. Supply orders for office and general supplies were placed and received from Office Depot and Demco. d. Lobby displays continue with “Make a Splash at you Library” outlining summer programs and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” on the slat board display. e. Met with the Safety Committee of the City of Columbia Heights.
