I. Programs
a. The Friends of the Library met on June 7, 2010. Members of the Friends
served as goodwill ambassadors during ‘Live at the Library’ on June 5;
continued to serve as reading partners for adult learners through the Buddy
Up and Read program; and planned to publicize their service work during
the city Jamboree Parade on June 25 but were rained out.
b. Four At Home service patrons borrowed fifty-five items this month. The
brochure describing the program was revised and updated.
c. Volunteers contributed twenty-four hours of service in June. One new
volunteer straightened reference, readied items for the sale cart, and
prepared a batch of donated CD cases for use. Three volunteers delivered
items to At Home patrons and four volunteers read weekly with the Buddy
Up and Read program.
d. The book group discussed Tim O’Brien’s Going After Cacciato.
e. Live at the Library was enthusiastically attended on Saturday, June 5.
Straighten Up and Fly Right: An Unforgettable Tribute to Nat King Cole
was presented in the Activity Room and woodcarver Lee Olson
demonstrated his technique and carvings in the adult reading room.
f. The Love in the Afternoon film fest was held on four consecutive
Tuesdays. The classic romantic comedies It Happened One Night, Grand
Hotel, Philadelphia Story, and Sabrina were shown. Attendance ranged
from 5-8 persons each week.
II. Collection
a. A DVD order was placed with Baker and Taylor this month. It included
new adult and children’s feature films, adult non-fiction health and travel
videos, and replacement copies of classic movies previously held on VHS.
In addition, a few donated feature films were added.
III. Projects
a. Library Board, Friends, Foundation, and staff planned an informational
kiosk for the Jamboree parade. They hoped to promote library services and
connect with patrons. Heights Rental generously donated the use of two
tent canopies. Unfortunately, severe weather necessitated cancellation of
the parade.
b. Fidelity cleaning service did a walkthrough of the facility and made
recommendations regarding the men’s restroom, which were
implemented.
c. Supply orders for office and general supplies were placed and received
from Office Depot and Demco.
d. Lobby displays continue with “Make a Splash at you Library” outlining
summer programs and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” on the slat board
display.
e. Met with the Safety Committee of the City of Columbia Heights.
