June operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 6/18.
B. The mats were cleaned 6/1.
C. I attended the 6-month review meeting 6/14 with NSI/Horwitz, which holds the new HVAC
contract for City buildings. The building log was delivered and goals for improved
communications were set.
D. I am working with Fire Chief Gary Gorman to have Firenet install a new fire panel with a
monitoring function in the Library.
E. The upstairs women’s restroom suffered a serious plumbing problem 6/22. Kudos to
Lauren, Renee, and Nancy for springing into action to prevent a water disaster. Temporary
fixes were installed by Public Works, and Olson Plumbing put in the permanent parts.
F. Heights Electric repaired the exterior security lights.
G. NSI/Horwitz performed routine preventive maintenance on the HVAC and changed the air
filters 6/22.
H. The public copier required repair 6/24.
I. The coin-op on the public copier had to be repaired 6/28.
J. Orkin performed routine maintenance 6/21.
II. COLLECTION
A. Regular book orders were placed during the month. In addition, a large order of
replacements and updated editions was placed.
B. Adult weeding is completed through Fiction R and through Fiction SM.
C. Heavy weeding of the videocassettes continues. At this time, all audio cassettes have been
withdrawn.
D. Review of the periodical subscription list has been started.
E. 10-day book requests were added weekly.
III. PROGRAMS
A. Summer Reading Program started 6/1. The themes for 2010 are “Make a Splash at Your
Library” and “Make Waves at Your Library.”
B. The Friends met 6/7 with 8 members in attendance.
C. The Library Board met 6/2 with 7 members in attendance.
D. Marsha visited the elementary schools 6/1, 6/2, and 6/3 to promote Summer Reading Club
and summer programs.
E. “Live at the Library” exploded across Anoka County on 6/5, with 33 different musical,
historical, artistic, and cultural events scheduled in the nine public library buildings. Mayor
Gary Peterson and Library Board President Pat Sowada were interviewed by the traveling
videographer for a film clip to be used on the website. CHPL was happy to host Straighten
Up and Fly Right, who presented a tribute to Nat King Cole, and woodcarver Lee Olson.
Thanks to Renee Dougherty and Katie Sue McCarthy for being the local hosts for the Legacy
Program. The gatecount for the day was over 500 people!
F. The summer Volunteens started working the week of 6/14.
G. Marsha presented three sessions of preschool storytime in June.
H. Five sessions of Read Dogs were held during the month. This program continues to be very
popular.
I. Buddy Up With a Friend, a program where a patron wishing to practice reading is teamed up
with a member of the Friends, has four current teams meeting at the Library.
J. A Percy Jackson activity was held 6/17 with participants making their own protective
Olympian shields.
K. Three Wacky Wednesdays were held during June: Bill the Juggler (6/16), Matt Dunn the
Magician (6/23), and the Okee Dokee Brothers (6/30).
L. Staff, members of the Friends, the Library Board, and the Foundation Board worked at
booths along the Jamboree Parade route on 6/25 to promote library services. We all got to
practice our tattoo skills, as Marsha found great reading tattoos for us to give to the people
who visited the booths. Unfortunately, the activity was cut short due to severe
thunderstorms, and everyone got drenched.
M. Headstart had a special field trip at the Library 6/28.
N. The Adult Book Club met 6/30 and discussed the book, Going after Cacciato. Renee will
work with this enthusiastic group to help them choose the titles for their next sessions.
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. The new online table was finally received 6/7. Jesse was able to install the Gates computers,
and they are all operational as of 6/18. These computers were purchased with a grant from
the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Opportunity Hardware program.
B. The Legacy Funds program provided funding for a projector, sound system, and Blue-Ray
DVD player for CHPL. MELSA used Legacy Funds to purchase a public performance
license for certain movies to be shown in member libraries. Renee was able to arrange for
four movie programs on Tuesdays using the theme, “Love in the Afternoon.”
V. STAFF
A. I attended three Library Management Team meetings in June. I also attended a
worksession/retreat with the Management Team and the ACL Library Board on 6/24.
B. Summer schedule started 6/15.
C. Michelle Wermerskirchen started Page training 6/23.
D. The Library had no graduating Pages in 2010. Since the staff usually takes the graduates out
to breakfast to celebrate, we decided to go out anyway and celebrate all the past graduations!

E. Kelly celebrated her 18 anniversary with the Library during the month
F. Summer schedule started the week of 6/14.
G. I started working with Unique Management to provide help with Collections for CHPL.
H. Renee attended a meeting of the City Safety Committee 6/30.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation Board met 6/16 with six members present. President Marlaine Szurek led
the discussion on the spaghetti supper and the Heights Theatre Fundraiser. The movie will

be the original black and white version of “Miracle on 34 Street.” The results of the
Linders fundraiser and participation at the Library’s Jamboree booths were also discussed.
VII. MISC
A. Delivery switched to three days a week in June. Saturday delivery will resume after Labor
Day.
B. Saturday hours changed to 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on 6/19. These hours will be in effect till
the Saturday before Labor Day.
