I. Programs
a. The Friends of the Library met on May 3 at the Library. Friends continue to
volunteer with the Buddy Up and Read and will be underwriting the cost of
rotating literature display racks for the circulation desks.
b. Sixty-one items were delivered to four At Home patrons.
c. Volunteers have been delivering materials to At Home patrons and reading with
three adult English Language Learners as part of the Buddy Up and Read
program.
d. Twelve members of the book group met on May 26 to discuss Tallgrass by Sandra
Dallas.
II. Collection
a. A DVD order was placed with Baker and Taylor. Current popular feature films,
classic films from the American Film Institute’s Top 100, and a selection of non-
fiction DVDs, notably GED preparation, English as a Second Language, and
elementary and high school math instruction, were added to the collection.
b. An order of music CDs was placed with Baker and Taylor with selections of
classical, fingerstyle, and jazz guitar; Broadway musicals; and rock and roll,
country, and popular artists.
III. Projects
a. Was introduced to the Library Board and received a very warm and encouraging
welcome from them.
b. Preparations for the Jamboree Parade have begun. Heights Rental has tentatively
promised the use of two canopies for informational booths during the parade.
Barnes and Noble was asked to donate a “nook” electronic reader for a grand
prize drawing; we await a response from the district community relations
manager.
c. Displays in the lobby include “Make a Splash at your Library this summer”
featuring summer programming and “Take Me out to the Ballgame” on the slat
board display. Displays near the public Internet terminals include career and job
search resources and popular paperbacks.
d. Booklists in the stacks, a self-serve readers’ advisory tool, are being revised.
e. Met with the Safety Committee of the City of Columbia Heights to continue
revision of the Safety Manual, to review current accidents and injuries, and
promote safety awareness and training for city employees.
