March operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUPIMENT
A. The windows were cleaned 3/16.
B. Public Works was able to clear the downspout in the courtyard on the south side of the
building when it became blocked with leaves and debris from the snowmelt.
C. Public Works performed several small repair jobs at the building 3/24.
D. Fidelity Cleaners conducted a walk-through inspection 3/23. I continue to be very satisfied
with Heidi, the Library’s current cleaner.
E. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 3/12.
II. COLLECTION
A. Six book orders were placed and received. Two adult paperback book orders were placed
and received. An adult and juvenile dvd order was placed. An adult CD order was placed.
B. Pages are working on repairing the magazine collection..
C. Adult weeding is complete through Fiction O. Weeding of the adult nonfiction is complete
up through 969.
III. PROGRAMS
A. The classes from Immaculate Conception School and Global Academy visited the Library
3/8-3/12 during their scheduled times.
B. The Friends met 3/1 with 7 members present. The Wish List will be presented at their April
meeting.
C. The Library Board met 3/3 with eight members in attendance.
D. Teen Tech Week was celebrated 4/8-4/13 with the theme, “Learn, Create, Share @ Your
Library.”
E. Two sessions of preschool story time were held during the month.
F. Marsha attended Latino Night at Highland Elementary School 3/16.
G. The School District held three “Encore” classes at the Library during the month.
H. ISD #13 hosted author Debra Frasier for a residency 3/26. A “meet and greet” was held at
the Library in the afternoon.
I. Lyric Arts held a Fractured Fairy Tales workshop at the Library 3/27. This program was
funded in part or in whole with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on
November 4, 2008, which dedicated funding to preserve Minnesota’s art and cultural
heritage. Thanks to Monica and Mary Oliver for working so hard to coordinate the events
that are part of the Legacy Funding project.
J. The Adult Book Club met 3/31 to discuss Born on a blue day.
K. Kids Read/Dogs Listen started up again on 3/15. The program is so popular that extra
sessions were added on an additional day. The program is funded in part with a grant from

the Minnesota Department of Education using Federal funding, CFDA 84.287c, 21 Century
Community Learning Centers in collaboration with ISD #13. Volunteer help is provided by
the Friends of the Library.
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. The IS Department has spent time with me this month in preparing proposals for hardware
and cost estimates for the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program grant. I appreciate
all the assistance they have given to me.
B. The Gates pc’s have been received, and the IS Department is in the process of setting them
up for installation. Staff is very excited about having new machines for the public to use.
The Library Board voted to use funds from the donation account to purchase a Buckstaff
online table to match the other furniture in the Adult Reading Room, and it will be used for
the two catalog pc’s. The matching money for the grant was raised through sales from the
Book Sale Cart.
V. STAFF
A. Marsha attended a Heighten the Arts meeting 3/16.

B. Marsha attended a 21 Century meeting 3/17.
C. I met with Fire Chief Gary Gorman 3/23 to go over the proposals for monitoring the
Library’s sprinkler system and to review the next step for the Continuity of Operations Plan.
D. Ramon Gomez completed his third year of service as a Library Clerk.
E. I am delighted to announce that Renee Dougherty will be joining the staff on 4/12 as the
Adult Services Librarian. Renee comes to the staff from the Benson Public Library, where
she was the Director. I look forward to working with her and to introducing her to ACL’s
staff.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation Board met 3/10 with seven members present. Discussion centered around
the Spaghetti Supper in September and the Heights Theatre fundraiser in December.
VII. MISCELLANEOUS
A. Major Projects

B. The Library’s hours changed on 2/1, and the patrons have responded positively to having
Tuesday night open till 8:00 p.m. and to extending Saturday hours to 4:00 p.m.
C. I served as one of a panel of four to review the responses to an RFP for engineering services
for the new pedestrian bridge. The bridge is partially funded with stimulus money.
D. I proctored a test 3/13. I suspect this type of request to increase as more people take online
learning classes.
