st
the Library the week of December 1.
B. Bulk loans were pulled and picked up on December 17.

On December 9, Artist Marcia McEachern met with citizens to discuss options
for public art in Columbia Heights. McEachern has been retained as a part of HA
(Heighten the Arts) efforts to provide art for all citizens. The program is being
funded via an MRAC Grant with matching funds from the City of Columbia
Heights and ISD 13. The first piece of public art is slated for the courtyard of the
HylanderCenter.
D. Four Headstart classes visited the Library in December. Classes were
treated to a special Storytime and library tour.

General Grant.

and AV, Fiction N for Print, and Audio, CD781.66 Sm - 782.1 M, CD E N
D. Work continues on the collection development of the Paperbacks.
III. PROJECTS
A. In an attempt to decrease the amount of staff time involved in producing
separate posters and flyers for each Library program, I have initiated a
trial of two new publicity items. In January we will begin producing a
Teen Page and a program page titled Applaud. The Teen Page will
promote materials and events of interest to middle school and high school
students. Applaud (discussions, performances, lectures, readings) will
contain information on upcoming programs at the CHPL. Each edition
will feature this months programs and a listing of upcoming programs--
one month out. The Applaud document can include both adult and
Juvenile programming. If I can keep ahead of the scheduling then Applaud
should cut down on the number of documents being prepped by staff and
displayed in the building. Copies are attached.
IV. GRANTS
A. The Women of Today Grant application was submitted on behalf of the
foundation. Results should be known by the end of January.
B. I submitted a grant request to the Lois Lenski Foundation but did not
receive funding.
C. The Dollar General grant expenditures were completed by year-end.
st
D. Planning is underway for funds being supplied through 21 Century Grant.
V. STAFF
A. The annual Summer Reading Program meeting was held at Northtown on
December 10. Several changes are in the works regarding the Summer
Reading program. Most noted is that MELSA has decided to withdraw
from their participation in the Collaborative Summer Library Program
(National program) and return to producing their own local program. The
decision will not affect the 2010 program except that MELSA will be
producing their own reading records. However, expect some major
changes in 2011.
B. I attended several meeting Related to HA (Heighten the Arts). I expect this
program to become very prominent within the community shortly and am
pleased that Library is participating. The organizations WEB page should
be up by the end of February and will include information on Library
events and programs. I would like to find a professional photographer
willing to volunteer to take photos at our events. They would present a
much better library image on WEB pages like this one. Anyone interested
in a preview of the WEB page can contact me for the “not for public
viewing” access information.
C. I have begun planning for the 2010 program schedule. Several programs
have been booked. I expect to have a completed schedule in January.
D. Staff attended the annual Holiday Luncheon on December 9. I received
th
my 25 Anniversary award. I doesn’t seem like it has been that long.
Staff enjoyed the celebration and the break from a very busy and pushed
year. Thank you to those who made the program possible and thank you
to the City for providing such a program in a difficult budget year.
E.
Matthew Stenberg, Rukia Sheikh-Mohamed, and Regina Jesse all received
participated in their appraisals along with
performance appraisals in December, I
the Library Director.
VI. MISC
A. A number of patrons have commented recently on the lack of parking at
the library, especially those individuals with small children. We are
getting busier everyday and more people are having to park on the street.
Navigating the snow and ice is proving difficult.
