I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. Honeywell worked on the heating units and boiler 10/22 to ensure they were ready for winter
service.
B. The ceiling leaked around the lobby air conditioning unit 10/6. Dalco responded and
repaired all suspect areas in the roof that could be causing leaks. The culprit appears to be
the air conditioning unit, which has many joints that are loose.
C. The windows were cleaned 10/1.
D. The RFP’s for the hvac contract were received 10/21.
E. The Library had its annual fire inspection 10/8 and passed with no violations.
F. I met with Jack Jensen of the Retrofit Companies on 10/8. His company will be installing
the light bulbs and new exit signs that are part of the Library’s energy audit project.
G. The coin-op on the public service copier was repaired 10/6.
H. The ceil
I. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 10/16.
II. COLLECTION
A. Collection development and replacement book orders are in process.
B. Weeding of the media collection is up to date. Work on the video and audio cassette
collection is also proceeding on schedule.
C. Adult weeding is complete up to the 910’s and from adult 921G to 921Z.
D. Collection development is being worked on in the adult career area, 500’s and 400’s.
E. Two adult paperback orders were placed and received.
F. The cd collection was cleaned and mended.
G. Federal tax form order was placed.
III. PROGRAMS
A. The Library Board met 10/7 with four members in attendance.
B. Nine members of the Friends of the Library met 10/5 at the Dragon House.
C. Four sessions of preschool storytime were presented during the month. Thanks to Kelly for
covering three of them in Marsha’s absence.
D. Global Academy brought field trips to the Library 10/8 and 10/22.
E. The classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the Library during the week of 10/5.
F. Nine sessions of Read Dogs were held in October. This popular program is funded in part
by a grant from the Minnesota Department of Education using Federal funding, CFDA
st
84.287c, 21 Century Community Learning Centers.
G. Teen Read Week was celebrated 10/19-10/24 with the theme, “Read Beyond Reality.”
H. Nancy gave a tour and a demonstration of the new online Homework Rescue database to a
group of ESL adult students 10/23.
I. The Sister City Organization put up a display in honor of Polish/American month for
October.
J. The Adult Book Club discussed The story of Edgar Sawtelle on 10/28.
K. The first two sessions of Baby Storytime were held 10/21 and 10/28.
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. The City installed a new telephone switch that enabled new features on the phone system.
B. The cut over to the Comcast IP address is complete. The T1 to ACL has been cancelled.
V. STAFF
A. Stacey participated in a cable shoot for “The Calendar Show” 10/28.
B. Marsha attended the ELL open house at the High school 10/1.
C. Stacey attended telephone training 10/20 and trained the rest of the staff on the new
functions of the phone system.
D. Elaine participated in a webinar put on by Midwest Tapes on 10/28.
E. I attended the Public Service meeting 10/1 at LSS.
F. On 10/6 and 10/7, I attended “Turning the Page,” training for recipients of the Gates Grant
at the Hyatt-Regency in Minneapolis. Accompanied by Catherine Vesley and Barb Miller, I
attended sessions designed to prepare an action plan for meeting the grant’s requirements. It
was an intense two days filled with a lot of information.
VI. FOUNDATION
G. The Foundation Board met 10/14 with seven members in attendance. The second Spaghetti
Supper fundraiser was discussed, and members praised the hard work of Todd, who donated
all the spaghetti from Tasty Pizza, and the Women of Today, who provided workers for the
entire event. Many other volunteers assisted and made sure the event went smoothly. Plans
for the fundraiser at the Heights Theatre were discussed. An updated list of items for the
silent auction was distributed. Tickets, flyers, and posters will be printed within the next
two weeks for distribution to the members.
VII. MISC
A. I would like to recognize the extra effort that my staff made this month to maintain service
during Marsha’s absence. I appreciated the offers of help and the teamwork that was
displayed while we were extremely short of staff. Kudos to you all!
