Subject: August 2009 Operational Report
Date: August 24, 2009
I. PROGRAMS
A. Summer Reading Program participation is up. We have registered a total of 864 Columbia
Heights youth in reading programs this summer. That is the highest registration total on record
since 1967.
B. Wacky Wednesday participation was also up this year. Anoka County reported our attendance
stats up 34%. However we also provided one more program in June than the other libraries. It
appears that the quality of the program does make a difference as a number of people mentioned
that they drove here to see a particular performer because their library was not hosting that
particular performance. Performer rates also went up again this year. Thankfully we had grant
funds this year, which enabled us to provide these programs.
II. COLLECTION
A. Weeding of YA, EJ and J Audio cassettes is complete
B. Weeding of J Quartos has begun
C. Two large book orders were placed and received
D. Placed the final Standing Order of 2009 for Books on CD
III. PROJECTS
A. Preparations are under way for Library Card Sign up month (September).
B. September 16 begins Hispanic American Heritage Month. Check for book displays, puzzles and
quizzes.
C. Preparation is underway for the fall session of Baby Read Baby Grow. I have met with ECFE
rep Jan Heinecke and made preliminary theme plans. Sessions begin September 16. We will be
offering two sessions each Wednesday at 9:30 and 10:30.
IV. GRANTS
A. Columbia Height Public Library is the recipient of a 2009 Dollar General Grant. Grant money
will be used to establish a collection of high interest low vocabulary titles, Book and CD combos
and some concept oriented board books.
B. Columbia Heights Public Library in partnership with ISD 13 is the recipient of grant money via
st
21 Century Grant. Funds from this grant will be used to expand summer reading efforts,
provide cultural programs during the school year, and to continue Kids READ Dogs Listen.
V. STAFF
A. Staff has been very active with programs, providing reference and referrals to patrons. With the
shortage of staff due to the economic downturn we have been challenged in our attempts to maintain with
less. However, the public comes first and I believe that in this area we have managed to provide excellent
service this summer.
