August operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. The windows were cleaned 8/6.
B. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 8/21.
C. The public copier required a service call 8/24.
D. Honeywell performed routine maintenance on the HVAC 8/5.
II. COLLECTION
A. Two paperback and eight hardcover book orders were placed during the month. Orders for
dvd’s and spoken word cd’s were also placed.
B. Adult weeding is completed up through Fiction K and 822. Collection development items in
the adult 100’s and adult 400 were ordered.
C. A Large Print order was placed to supplement the Library’s one standing order.
D. The Police Department is looking for historical photographs to use in the new Public Safety
building. I met with Lenny Austin, Terry Nightingale, Karen Olson, and Chief Scott Nadeau
8/4 so that they could see what is available in the local history collection. They selected
several items that fit in with their theme.
III. PROGRAMS
A. Summer Reading Program ended 8/28. The themes for 2009 were “Be Creative @ Your
Library” and “Express Yourself @ Your Library.”
B. “Draw on Your Wild Side” program was presented 8/5.
C. Airplane Annie put on a special pre-school program 8/4.
D. The Adult Book Club met 8/20 to discuss The curious incident of the dog in the night time.
E. The Library Board met 8/5 with all members in attendance.
F. Bob Lipski put on an Anime/Manga drawing workshop 8/8.
G. The Polish students sponsored by the Sister City Organization toured the Library 8/6. The
students are all from Lomianki, the Sister City of Columbia Heights.
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. The IS Department worked on the network in the Library 8/16 in preparation for the
SIRSI/DYNIX migration.
B. Aleksandr, Jesse, and I participated in a conference call with ACL and SIRSI/DYNIX on 8/4
to discuss implications for the coming migration to remote hosting at the end of August.
Based on information received at the meeting, the CHPL will be closed to the public 8/26-
8/28.
C. The migration of SIRSI to a remote host occurred 8/26-8/28.
V. STAFF
A. Two Pages, Alison Marzolf and Patience Waldemar, celebrated their two-year anniversaries
during the month of August.
B. Marsha and I met with the Pages 8/18 to negotiate Fall schedule.
C. Stacey Hendren celebrated her second anniversary as the Clerk-Typist II (Adult) in August.
D. Patience Waldemar and Alison Marzolf celebrated their second anniversaries as Pages in
August.
E. Marsha attended an in-service for teachers at Immaculate Conception School 8/31.
F. All Staff Day was cancelled for 2009. We all look forward to attending again next year.
G. Stacey participated in a cable shoot for the “Heights Calendar Show” 8/26.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation Board met 8/5 with five members present. Bruce will get a quote for
printing the advertising items for the Spaghetti Supper, and the items will be available for
pick-up at the Library when they are finished. Final preparations for the volunteers and food
were discussed. The Women of Today and the Friends of the Library will volunteer to help
at the event. Members suggested potential donors for the December silent auction.
VII. MISC
A. Major projects:
