HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report for Marsha To: M. Rebecca Loader, Library Director From: Marsha Tubbs, Children’s Librarian Subject: June 2009 Operational Report Date: June 30, 2009 I. PROGRAMS A. ESL and ELL classes from CMS visited the Library on June 8. They received a tour of the building and a tutorial on how to use the Library catalog. B. Summer Reading Programs are underway. We have registered a total of 536 children over the last 4 weeks. Be Creative at the Library has a registration total of 391 and Express yourself at the Library has a registration total of 145. Teachers within District 13 have been encouraging families to participate and continue practicing reading over the summer. We are receiving numerous requests for our Fountas and Pinnell leveled booklists. C. Storytime crowds are huge and a challenge. Attendance, including children and adults, is about 60-70 people, a far bigger crowd than in the past. D. We have had several requests and laments regarding the loss of the American Girl program this summer. Two or three people have offered to pay for the program. Unfortunately money was only one of the issues we faced. American Girl is a very staff intensive program and with the current staff shortages we just couldn’t find a way to make it work. Patrons understood but were disappointed. II. COLLECTION A. A Books on CD order was place June 3, 2009 through Random House. Most have arrived and been added to the collection. B. A book order of replacement titles and additional high demand titles was also placed in June. C. Staff prepared NEW book orders based on grids supplied by ACL. A shout of thanks to our friends up north! These grids help to shorten our selection and order time, I find them very helpful. III. PROJECTS A. Avatar Twin display was established and teens participating in the Express Yourself reading program have been invited to display their photos and their avatar twin image. B. Baseball titles were placed on display for the season. Can’t pass up America’s greatest pastime. IV. MEETINGS A. The Director and I met with Linda Ernst from District 13 regarding the Library’s st role in the 21 Century Grant. The District has received this grant for the next three years with an option of an additional 2 years if all programming goes well. As a part of the grant the Library will again be providing the READ dog Program and a variety of cultural programs. The grant will also supply some funding for our Summer Reading Programs. B. Staff attended the all employee meeting held at City Hall. The City Manager relayed to city staff the economic picture for 2010 as it relates to the City. Finance has done an excellent job in preparing a plan to wean the city off of LGA funds. V. STAFF A. We continue to feel the crunch of staff cuts. Staff has been very accommodating in picking up the slack and wearing more than 2-3 hats. This would not be possible without the high level of dedication and public service ethics that is evident in each of the Library’s staff members.
