Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: June operational report DATE: June 30, 2009 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 6/19. B. The mats were cleaned 6/16. C. Heights Electric replaced several ballasts in the Adult Reading Room 6/11. D. Honeywell performed routine maintenance on the HVAC and changed the filters on the air handler 6/18. E. Public Works performed various small maintenance jobs at the Library 6/10. F. The windows were cleaned 6/9. G. The coin-op on the public copier had to be repaired 6/1. H. The carpeting was spot cleaned 6/13. I. Schindler performed a routine inspection of the elevator 6/23. J. Elaine and I met 6/16 with a representative from the Center for Energy and Environment which will be conducting an energy audit of the Library building. K. Orkin performed routine maintenance 6/16. L. I conducted a walk-through inspection with Fidelity Cleaners 6/24. II. COLLECTION A. One paperback and four hardcover book orders were placed during the month. B. The adult 000-099 and 300-339 areas were targeted for collection development in June. C. Weeding completed during the month: through 808. D. 10-day book requests were added weekly. III. PROGRAMS A. Summer Reading Program started 6/1. The themes for 2009 are “Get Creative @ Your Library” and “Express Yourself @ Your Library.” B. The Friends met 6/1 with 11 members in attendance. C. The Library Board met 6/3 with 7 in attendance. D. The summer Volunteens started working the week of 6/1. E. Marsha presented two sessions of preschool storytime in June. F. Marsha presented a special program for a Level 2 English as a Learning Language class from Central Middle School. G. The first Wacky Wednesday was held 6/17 with the Minnesota Percussion Trio performing. The audience response to them was amazing. H. The Adult Book Club met 6/24 and discussed the book, Long way gone. They are a very enthusiastic group and have decided to continue to meet on a regular basis after August. Elaine will work with them on choosing the titles for their next session. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Aleksandr and Jeff took down the public machines to install the latest version of Deep Freeze 6/11. B. The thermal printer downstairs was adjusted 6/12 to print the new hold slips. V. STAFF A. I conducted interviews the week of 6/1 for the vacant Page positions. Three people were hired: Regina Jesse, Rukia Sheikh-Mohamed, and Matthew Stenberg. They started training 6/24. B. Stacey is in the process of learning Access to use to catalog the Library’s local history collection. She will set up templates for the various types of artifacts. Access will build a database that will make it easier to locate specific items. C. Library staff attended the all-employee meetings 6/10 to hear the presentation from the Finance Director and the City Manager on the plans for the next four fiscal years. st D. Marsha and I met with Linda Ernst, School District 13, on 6/18 about the 21 Century grant. Funding will be available in September. E. I attended the Library Management Team meeting 6/11. F. Summer schedule started 6/15. G. Lauren Gutkaes, Aaron Mattson, and Patience Waldemar, graduating Pages, were honored at a breakfast hosted by the staff 6/18. th H. Kelly celebrated her 17 anniversary with the Library during the month. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 6/10 with six members present. Vice President Tom Sherohman led the discussion on the spaghetti supper and the Heights Theatre Fundraiser. The movie th will be the original black and white version of “Miracle on 34 Street.” VII. MISC A. CHPL started running multiple holds lists during the day 6/17. Morning lists are significantly smaller than when only one list was run. Because of staffing issues, only one will be run on Saturdays. B. Major projects: a. Preparation of proposed 2010 budget b. Interviewing and hiring of Page personnel c. Page training d.
