Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: May operational report DATE: May 31, 2009 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Honeywell prepped the air conditioning for the summer season 5/21. B. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 5/15. C. Heights Electric serviced the emergency doors and lights 5/6. D. Summit completed the annual test of the sprinkler system 5/12. E. The windows were cleaned 5/14. II. COLLECTION A. Two adult paperback orders were placed. B. Orders for cd’s and dvd’s were placed and received. C. Weekly hardcover orders were placed and received. D. I completed weeding Fiction H and through 799. E. Elaine completed a collection development project in 300-339 and 610-618. III. PROGRAMS A. The Library Board met 5/6 with all members present. B. Special field trips for ISD #13 Kindergarten classes were held 5/20. C. Self-pickup of holds started 5/4. Thanks to Sue Webb (and the Sirsi Circ Committee) and Judy Soule for their help in getting set up. The patrons have easily learned the new process and appear to like it, as staff has had no negative comments. D. The Friends met 5/4 with 9 members present. E. Two pre-school field trips visited the Library 5/6. F. Read Dogs continued through 5/6. G. National Children’s Book Week was celebrated 5/11-5/16. H. Monday and Wednesday delivery changed to 11:15 a.m. on 5/5. Friday delivery remained at approximately 9:30 a.m. The last Saturday delivery was 5/2. I. On 5/19 the Friends of the Library worked on sorting out and organizing a collection of letters sent by Columbia Heights servicemen during World War II to the local newspaper. These letters are part of the Library’s local history collection. J. The adult book group discussed Given day at their meeting 5/27. K. Marsha will start her school visits about summer reading club and programs 5/27. L. The classes from ICS and Global Academy visited the Library during their regularly- scheduled times the week of 5/11. M. Stacey participated in the “Heights Calendar Show” for cable 5/27. N. Marsha met with the Volunteens 5/20 for orientation for the summer season. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. The finally change-over of maintenance for the ILS to the City IS Department was made the week of 5/4. Thanks to Aleksandr, Jeff, and Al Rautio for making the transition as smooth as possible. B. Aleksandr, Jeff, and I attended a meeting 5/20 at ACL about the final details of the transition. C. A media converter failed on 5/18 and shut all the computer systems down till noon. V. STAFF A. I met with the staff responsible for reviewing the Honeywell contract 5/18. B. Elaine and I met with a representative from Voss Electric about energy efficient light bulbs 5/27. C. I met with Heidi Johnson from Anoka County 5/5 to discuss the display on homelessness that she will place in the Library in November. D. Lauren, Rachel, and Renee celebrated their year anniversaries as Pages. E. Stacey made new labels for the current magazine display. They look great and more effectively identify the Library’s periodical holdings. F. Al celebrated his 18-month anniversary as a Library Supervisor. G. I attended the Minnesota Public Library Directors’ Forum at the Rum River branch of ACL 5/8. H. Marsha and I met 5/19 with the Pages to negotiate summer schedule. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 5/13 with seven members in attendance. Members discussed plans for the Spaghetti Supper in September, and Marlaine will proceed with the publicity. Tom and Marlaine reported on a grant workshop they attended. VII. MISC A. A MELSA crossover survey was conducted the week of 5/4. B. Special projects: a. Vacation/furlough schedule b.
