PROGRAMS A. Baby Read Baby Grow, an early literacy program provided by the Library and ECFE, was a hit this season. Plans are underway to expand the program from three to six weeks in the fall of 2009 and spring of 2010. B. Spring Storytime came to a close with an average attendance of about 24 children and 8 to 10 adults. C. R.E.A.D dogs continue into May. The program is very popular. th D. Bulk Loans to the schools were picked up on April 15. E. ICS and Global academy students visited the Library again this month. COLLECTION A. Weeding of the Juvenile Paperback collection was completed. B. Weeding of YA paperbacks is nearly complete C. Weeding of the J Fiction H is complete D. Weeding of the J Non Fiction 810-909 continues E. Weeding of Easies D, E & H is complete F. Book Orders were placed from Booklist, School Library Journal. Kirkus and Title Tales lists. III. PROJECTS A. Preparations for Teen Summer Programming (Express Yourself) continue. ACL will be printing membership cards for use with this program and billing us a nominal fee. Program supplies have been ordered and arrived. B. Preparations for the Be Creative Summer Programs are also underway. Materials have been ordered and will be provided by MELSA in 2009. Status for 2010 is not known at this time. Due to City of Columbia Heights budget cuts, incentives for this program have been drastically reduced. C. Wacky Wednesday performances will be provided in summer 2008 thanks to grant monies available through the Minnesota Community After School Activities Grant, a collaborative between the Library and ISD 13. Schedule is as follows: Minnesota Percussion Trio June 17 2:00 p.m. Star Michaelina July 1 2:00 p.m. Bill the Juggler July 8 2:00 p.m. Airplane Annie July 15 2:00 p.m. Magician Matt Dunn July 22 2:00 p.m. Dakota Wild Animals July 29 2:00 p.m. D. Summer Storytime begins June 16. Staff is preparing for large crowds for all programming due to the economic down turn. E. Staff is preparing a large number of booklists for summer use. The demand from parents for materials that are age appropriate increases over the summer months, as does the demand for the newest series and special genre titles. IV. MEETINGS A. I attended a CAPP committee meeting on April 14. Final annual meeting for this group is schedule for May 2009. B. Kelly Olson conducted a storytime in my absence April 7. Thank you Kelly. C. Preparations for the Teen Summer Reading Program were accomplished outside of a scheduled meeting date. V. GRANTS A. The Library received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dana Weigman had applied for the grant entitled “ Picturing America” last fall. We will be displaying large photographic reproductions of American works of art along with related books and materials in the Children’s department though 2010. B. Minnesota Community After School Activities grant comes to a close in August. Monies from this grant are nearly all expended. st C. 21 Century Grant monies have been awarded and the Library will be receiving monies from the grant as a partner with ISD 13. The Library’s portion of the funds is not known at this time. VI. STAFF Shortages in personnel and changes in hours have affected workloads and we are falling behind. That being said, all staff members are going above and beyond what is asked of them. The level of cooperation is second to none I have seen in my working career. I do worry that we will not be able to keep up this pace through the summer push. I am confident however, that if anyone can do it this staff can.
