Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: December operational report DATE: December 29, 2008 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Schindler was called out 12/2 to check on the elevator. Because of the cold weather, the oil is less fluid than usual, which makes the elevator sluggish. B. Honey well performed routine maintenance on the HVAC 12/4. C. Kelly’s new desk was adjusted 12/16 to be more ergonomically correct. D. The shelving unit for self-pick-up of holds was installed in the main floor lobby 12/18. E. Orkin inspected for pest control 12/16. F. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 12/12. II. COLLECTION A. Year-end book, dvd, and cd orders were all processed. B. The new weeding schedule adopted for 2008 has greatly improved staff’s ability to effectively and efficiently weed the collection. Everyone is current on assigned areas as of the end of the month. Along with the revised standing order plan, the collection is in better shape as far as keeping current editions available. C. The part-time Reference staff is working on collection development in the adult non-fiction area. III. PROGRAMS A. The Library Board met 12/2 with six members in attendance. B. The Friends of the Library met 12/1 with twelve members present. C. The Friends collected 176 books through Project Bookshelf. These items were distributed through the local Southern Anoka County Action (SACA) food shelf. th D. The Library’s 80 birthday was celebrated 12/3 with an open house. Thanks to the Library Board, Foundation Board, Friends of the Library, and the staff for making the event a success. Approximately 150 people stopped in for cake and punch in addition to the regular patrons. E. Marsha hosted a special tour for Avid School 12/5. F. Teen Book club met 12/16. G. Marsha presented a special program for Headstart 12/17. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. The ISP change-over occurred 12/8. B. I attended a meeting at LSS 12/19 on the change over concerning the ILS in 2009. It appears that the project is on track and that deadlines are being met. C. COH was pre-approved for the next round of Gates Foundation grants. Time was spent compiling statistics and completing the required surveys. V. STAFF A. I was pleased to serve on the Employee of the Year Selection Committee this year. The award is granted by employees to their peers and recognizes outstanding service. I am delighted to announce that Kelly Olson, Clerk-Typist II in the Children’s Department, was selected as the 2009 Employee of the Year. Kudos! B. Applications for the vacant Adult Services Librarian were reviewed 12/2 and interviews were held during the week of 12/8. Second interviews were held later in the month. C. Staff attended the annual City Holiday Luncheon 12/10. We all enjoyed a delicious meal and participated in the Mayor’s new traditional sing-along at the start of the program. Thanks to all the people who made the event possible. D. Marsha attended a meeting at the School District 12/4 on the After-School Community st Learning grant and on the 21 Century Grant. E. Marsha attended several CAPP meetings during the month. F. I attended the LOC meeting 12/11. G. Stacey participated in the “Heights Calendar Show” on cable 12/17. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation sponsored a fundraiser at the Heights Theatre 12/7. The First Four, a singing group from First Lutheran Church, sang and led the audience in singing carols before the movie, “Christmas Story,” was shown. The silent auction was very well received by the attendees and contained wonderful items donated by various patrons, staff, and friends. VII. MISC A. Granny’s Closet has placed a collection box in the Library for the month of December. B. Major projects: a. Budget b. Honeywell contract c. Foundation fundraiser d. After-School Grant contract e.
