Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: September operational report DATE: September 30, 2008 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Honeywell changed the filters and performed routine maintenance on the HVAC 9/4. B. The Library was closed to the public while the lobby carpeting was replaced 9/5. The new carpeting looks wonderful! The staff got a lot of projects done behind the scenes during the day. Thanks to the Public Works crews for all their help in moving out the workstations in preparation for taking out the old carpeting. C. The lobby ceiling leaked around the central air conditioning unit 9/15. Dalco came out and caulked around the unit and checked the flashing. D. The downstairs restroom required a repair 9/16. E. The windows were washed 9/16. F. The elevator malfunctioned 9/9 and a boy was trapped inside. The Fire Department rescued him in under five minutes. Schindler re-set the elevator the next day. G. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 9/19. H. Public Works examined the Library’s sump pumps for the sump/pump/disconnect project. It appears that the ones in the elevator shaft will have to remain connected to the sanitary sewer as they could potentially be contaminated with hydraulic oil and could not go into the storm sewer. II. COLLECTION A. Four hardcover and two paperback orders were placed during the month. B. Additional copies of best-sellers and adult replacements were ordered. C. Adult weeding up to 684 is up-to-date. D. Collection development in the adult 600’s has started. E. Regina has spent time developing a mending procedure to give the Pages a guideline for mending materials. She will oversee both floors’ mending and give the Pages feedback as to their progress in skill building. III. PROGRAMS A. The new year of the Museum Adventure Pass program has started. The patrons are thrilled that the program is going to be around for another year. B. Global Academy brought their classes to the Library for a field trip 9/10. C. The Minnesota Crime Wave was guest presenter at a program sponsored by a grant from the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library 9/22. D. The annual 4-H Fall Round-Up used the Activity Room 9/25. E. The Library Board met 9/2 with five members in attendance. Mary Bussman, Principal at Valley View, gave a presentation on the Comprehensive Arts Planning Program (CAPP) that the Library is working on with ISD #13. F. The Friends of the Library met 9/8 with 7 members present. G. Marsha attended the ECFE open house 9/11. H. Classes from Immaculate Conception School started their monthly scheduled visits the week of 9/15. I. Book Club Café, aimed at ‘tweens, started 9/23, and is led by Jill Yngve. J. Stacey participated in taping the Calendar Show for cable broadcast 9/24. K. Dana led a book discussion on Peony in love on 9/25. IV. TECHNOLOGY A. Kelly received her new pc during the month. She is getting used to having City Forms readily available. V. STAFF A. Interviews for the vacant Library Supervisor position took place the week of 9/2. Renee Dougherty has accepted the job offer and started training 9/23. B. I attended Labor/Management training 9/10 sponsored by the Bureau of Mediation Services 9/10. C. Marsha attended a CAPP meeting 9/29. D. Jackie Torgerson of the League of Minnesota Municipalities analyzed two workstations for ergonomic conformity 9/10. Her recommendations will be used when we purchase replacement furniture for the Children’s Department. E. Dana celebrated her second year anniversary as the full-time Adult Services Librarian during the month. F. Renee Doughtery began training as the new part-time Library Supervisor 9/23. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board met 9/11 with seven members present. Marlaine went over all the details on the Spaghetti Dinner scheduled for 9/24. She distributed posters, flyers, and tickets to the members and asked for volunteers to assist at the event. Members also discussed the December fundraiser at the Heights Theatre and donations received for the silent auction. VII. MISC A. I proctored a college math test 9/18. B. Delivery switched to four times per week starting 9/8. Patrons are delighted to be back on what they call “fall schedule.” C. Marlene Moulton-Janssen brought new Maintenance Supervisor David Bratvold around for a tour of the building 9/11. D. Fall schedule hours started 9/2, and Saturday hours changed to 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on 9/6. E. .Major projects: a. 2009 proposed budget b. Detail budget book c. Performance reviews d.
