1. Programs
a. The Friends of the Library assisted with a moving sale, in which some
of the proceeds went to the organization. The Friends will meet again
in September.
b. At Home Service delivered 92 items in July and one new patron signed
up for the program.
c. Volunteers have put in 20 hours this month. They have been
instrumental in cutting out display items, cleaning materials and
shelving, and making new labels. One volunteer shifted the reference
collection, allowing for the removal of two old shelving units.
d. A “Beat the Heat” promotion was run for one week in July. If a patron
checked out 5 or more items, they received a free DVD rental. This
encouraged patrons to check out additional materials, and was well
received. A similar program is planned for August.
e. The book discussion group covered a chick-lit title by a Minnesota
st
author on the 31. Next month, The Kitchen Boy by Robert Alexander
is the group’s selection. This group has been very successful and loyal
to the library.
2. Collection
a. I have placed an order for 35 new music CDs this month, including
several opera titles to expand our collection.
b. The standing order for two new books on CD was placed. The
additions are The Senator’s Wife by Sue Miller and Remember Me by
Sophie Kinsell.
c. I have completed some collection development on the 600-639 portion
of the non-fiction. This includes new medical, gardening, and pet
books.
d. An order for mostly non-fiction DVDs was placed in July. New travel,
history, and exercise titles are in the process of being added to the
collection. Several Bob the Builder and Dora the Explorer titles were
added to the juvenile DVD collection.
3. Projects
a. Fidelity Cleaners has just hired a new cleaner for the library. This
process takes extra time because of the security checks required. The
substitute did an adequate job and hopefully the new cleaner will be
successful in her duties.
b. Displays in July include a “take 2 they’re small” display of small sized
books. The bulletin board features artful staff pictures and is entitled
“Master the art of reading.”
c. I have contacted three local carpet companies for quotes on re-
carpeting the lobby. All of the companies have been out to measure; I
am just waiting for the bids to come in.
d. Three furniture companies are bidding on new workstations for the
children’s department. I am waiting on design and price quotes from
two of the bidders.
4. Meetings
th
a. I attended a staff day planning meeting at LSS on July 28.
Preparations for staff day are nearly complete. The theme this year is
based on the Olympics with several games, contests, and prizes. The
presenters will cover a variety of topics, from the history of Anoka
County, to dealing with difficult patrons in the library.
