Rebecca Loader, Library Director SUBJECT: July operational report DATE: July 31, 2008 I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT A. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 7/25. B. Public Works planted additional bushes in the front yard of the Library 7/10. These fill in behind the hostas. C. Honeywell performed routine maintenance on the HVAC 7/28. D. The last of the stand-up public terminals were changed out 7/30. The public terminals were re-configured into a better arrangement for sight lines from the main desk. E. Schindler conducted the annual performance test on the elevator 7/15. F. The alarm button malfunctioned on the elevator 7/9 and had to be repaired. G. Ramon is taking bids for painting the lobby. H. Dana is taking bids on carpeting for the lobby, shelving, and new workstations for the Children’s Department. I. I am working with the City on a security proposal for the building. J. The blinds were cleaned and repaired during the month. th K. Public Works installed the new 80 Anniversary banner on the front of the building7/11. L. Honeywell gave an estimate on removing the south entrance heater 7/9. II. COLLECTION A. Five book orders were submitted during the month. Two adult paperback orders were also placed. B. I completed weeding the adult fiction B’s and C’s. I have weeded up through adult nonfiction 647. C. Adds and replacements were ordered for the adult collection. D. Dana did a collection development project in the 600-639’s. E. I reviewed the periodical renewal list and updated the order for 2009. III. PROGRAMS A. The Friends did not meet in July. B. The Library Board met 7/1 with five members in attendance. C. Stacey participated in a cable shoot 7/31. D. Dana conducted a book discussion on Welcome to my Planet 7/31. E. The summer Read Dogs session started 7/10. This popular program is full and has a waiting list. F. The week of 7/7 featured a dvd rental coupon giveaway entitled “Beat the Heat.” A coupon was given out if a patron checked out five or more items at a time. The coupons were to be given away during the Jamboree Parade, but when the Library unit was pulled from the Parade due to the weather, Dana devised a way to use them. G. Four sessions of preschool storytime were presented by staff in July. At two of the sessions, representatives from Anoka County’s Children and Youth Services Department set up a display highlighting health information aimed at families and provided a representative to talk to interested individuals. Response was positive. H. Four Wacky Wednesdays were held: Ten Penny Tunes (7/9), Magic of Brian Richards (7/16), Dakota Wild Animals (7/23) and Bruce the Bug Guy (7/30). . IV. TECHNOLOGY A. 2009 budget requests for new equipment have been submitted. B. Meetings on the ILS continued during the month. C. The City’s server crashed 7/28, and staff was without pc’s for one day. This did not affect the ILS. V. STAFF A. Marsha and I met with Jill Yngve of Simon and Schuster 7/8. Jill talked about what materials (i.e. study guides, book marks, posters) that can be provided in bulk for use with programming. Jill will be working with Marsha on potential volunteer opportunities and author visits. B. I attended the Public Service meeting 7/17 at St. Francis. I had never seen the St. Francis branch before and thoroughly enjoyed meeting in the park building. Thanks to Diana for hosting the meeting. VI. FOUNDATION A. The Foundation Board did not meet in July. B. Marsha submitted the final MRAC report on behalf of the Foundation in July. VII. MISC A. A MELSA crossover use survey was conducted 7/13-7/19. B. I proctored two tests for long-distance learners in July. C. The Police Department has provided a Community Service Officer (CSO) for varying amounts of time at the Library on a rotating basis in an attempt to heighten awareness of behavior. D. Paperwork for the second quarter After-School Grant reimbursement was submitted. E. Major projects: a. Proposed 2009 budget hearing with Finance Director and City Manager b.
