The Friends of the Library met on May 5 in the library boardroom. They have agreed to manage an estate sale for a former member of the group as a fundraiser. Half of the proceeds from the sale will go to the Friends organization. The sale will be the week of the Jamboree in June. b. At home service delivered 35 items this month to only two patrons. More requests are expected in June. c. Volunteers have cleaned shelves, priced book sale books, and made flowers for the lobby this month. A new volunteer has done an excellent job of straightening the large print materials and shifting the CD music into the new drawers. Volunteers through the beautification committee have planted and watered the bed and containers on the parking lot side of the library. d. The monthly book club continues to be popular with patrons. The group decided to continue to meet during the summer, and has chosen titles for the next eight months. The selection for June is Sandra Dallas’ Diary of Mattie Spenser. II. Collection a. A large book on CD order was placed with funds from The Dollar General as part of a young adult grant. Some classics were added, such as The Hobbit, and Fountainhead. b. Many DVDs were added to the collection just in time for the summer season. Any missing Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and Harry Potter movies were purchased in anticipation of requests for these materials. Several Oscar-winning films were added along with some new children’s titles. c. No music CDs were purchased this month. d. An inventory of the videocassettes was completed in May. This collection continues to circulate at a surprisingly heavy rate. III. Projects a. Fidelity cleaners continues to look for a permanent cleaner for the library. In the meantime, the two substitutes are doing an adequate job. b. Displays in the adult department include the bulletin board on travel information available at the library, the mother-daughter book club on the slat board, and new books are available in the reading room. The Friends of the library put up a display on Minnesota Statehood in the display case to celebrate the sesquicentennial. IV. Meetings a. I have been appointed to the organizational committee for Anoka County’s nd Staff day, which will be held on August 22 at Bunker Hills Regional Park. The committee will meet several more times prior to August. The speakers and most of the schedule for the day-long training have been determined. We are in the process of selecting a caterer and organizing the icebreaker and other games for the event.
