I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT
A. Honeywell prepped the air conditioning for the summer season 5/21.
B. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floors 5/16.
C. The urinal in the main floor’s men’s room was repaired 5/19.
D. Summit completed the annual test of the sprinkler system 5/8.
E. The carpeting was cleaned 5/3.
F. Public Works filled in a sink-hole in the parking lot 5/6. They were also able to patch the
rough area in the parking lot paving.
G. The coin-op on the public copier required a service call 5/22.
H. The mats were cleaned 5/27.
II. COLLECTION
A. Two adult paperback orders were placed.
B. Orders for cd’s and dvd’s were placed and received.
C. Weekly hardcover orders were placed and received.
D. I completed weeding 600-628.
E. The adult standing orders have been reviewed and combined for a bid from Baker and
Taylor. Many titles were dropped for low use. Travel guides have been added to the master
list and will no longer be ordered separately.
III. PROGRAMS
A. The Library Board met 5/6 with all members present. The Board recognized President
Barbara Miller’s retirement from her position at Fredrikson and Byron with a small
reception.
B. Four special field trips for ISD #13 Kindergarten classes were held 5/20 and 5/21. The
children were charming and very appreciative of the program.
C. The Friends met 5/5 with nine members present.
D. The last bulk loan was delivered to the schools 5/1. Final pick-up for the year was 5/22.
E. Read Dogs continued through 5/22. This popular program will resume in July.
F. National Children’s Book Week was celebrated 5/12-5/17.
G. Ketzl Coaticue, Aztec Dancers, performed 5/12 to a very appreciative crowd.
H. Mike the Baker put on a show 5/15.
I. Delivery switched to Monday-Wednesday-Friday starting the week of 5/19. The last
Saturday delivery was 5/17.
J. It was a special event 5/21 when Nancy Carlson came to Columbia Heights for a residency
program which included the schools and the Library. She visited classrooms and gave a
special talk at the Library in the evening.
K. Dana led a book discussion 5/22 on Peace like a river. Eight people attended. Her loyal
attendees voted to continue meeting during the summer and selected their next books to
discuss.
L. Marsha will start her school visits about summer reading club 5/20.
M. The classes from ICS visited the Library during their regularly-scheduled times the week of
5/19.
N. Marsha and Kelly met with the Volunteens 5/21 for orientation for the summer season.
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. Kelly’s new computer has arrived and will be set up before the end of the month.
V. STAFF
A. Ramon, Dana, Kelly, and Marsha trained in the new Pages during the month. Lauren
Gutkaes, Rachel Meyers, and Renee Rewitzer will be on the regular schedule starting in
June.
B. I attended the Library Operations Council meeting 5/1.
C. I sat in on the interviews for the Engineering Tech IV 5/13 as a stand-in for the Personnel
Director. It was very interesting to interview for such a technical position.
D. I met with two representatives about cost estimates for print managers.
E. Marsha conducted a class on mending and processing with the Pages 5/8.
F. I met with the Finance Director and IS Director about credit cards being accepted at the
Library 5/12.
G. Dana attended a meeting about Staff Day 5/12.
H. Dana, Marsha, and I met 5/20 with the Pages to negotiate summer schedule.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation Board met 5/21 with eight members in attendance. It was a great pleasure
to welcome Bruce Magnuson as a new member. Mr. Magnuson has been a long-time
supporter of the Library and brings years of business experience to the Foundation Board.
Discussion centered on the December fundraiser, the capital campaign, and the Jamboree
parade.
VII. MISC
A. A MELSA crossover survey was conducted the week of 5/5.
B. The Beautification Committee placed flowers in the containers in the courtyard 5/14.
C. Special projects:
a. Vacation schedule
b. Part-time summer schedule
c. 2009 budget
