Rebecca Loader, Library Director From: Marsha Tubbs, Children’s and Young Adult Librarian Subject; April Operational report Date April 29, 2008 I. PROGRAMS The bulk loan was delivered to the schools on April 3. It has been nice to see the local elementary A. schools participating in the program this year. ICS Classes visited the Library during the week of April 14-April 18. B. R.E.A.D. Dogs continues to be HOT. Seventy-eight children have participated in the R.E.A.D. Dog C. program thus far and the numbers continue to grow. Exposed Brick Theatre performed on April 14. This young adult theatre group received rave reviews. D. Big Fun Family Circus provided an after school program on April 17. The crowd of 50 enjoyed the antics E. of David Walbridge. Head Start groups visited the Library on April 16 and April 23. I provided a storytime and tour for the F. groups of approximately 20 each. Columbia Heights Preschool visited on April 30. I provided a special storytime and tour for both groups. G. I also provided a special program for a Family Literacy field trip April 30. H. II. COLLECTION Staff caught up on checking selection tools through January 2008. A. I placed two Baker and Taylor orders for hardcover materials and two orders for paperback B. replacements. Weeding of the J 600 to J630 is complete. C. Weeding of the J Fiction A-B is complete. D. Weeding of Paperbacks is complete. E. III. PROJECTS I have completed negotiations with the Elementary Schools in ISD 13 for a single day residency A. st with author, Nancy Carlson. We are awaiting Nancy’s confirmation on the date of May 21. thth Nancy will be meeting with 4 and 5 grade classes in all three elementary schools and st providing an evening program on May 21 here at the library. Thanks to the extra efforts of Shelly Edwardson, North Park Media Specialist and all three principals: Katherine Page, Mary Bussman and Jeff Cacek. Summer Reading program preparations are nearly complete. We are matching Anoka County’s B. Look What’s Cooking at the program with a few additional features. This year’s theme is Library and celebrates everyone’s birthday. The program features author Debra Frasier’s book A Birthday Cake is No Ordinary Cake. Participants will receive Birthday Bucks (monopoly type money) for every 5 hours of reading and will be able to redeem them at the library’s “Sweet Shop”. Lots of sugar and lots of kids what could make for a more exciting summer? This year we will be cooperating with ISD 13 in the collection of data for use in future grant applications. Thus we are redoing our registration process to enable us to collect data that will be useful to C. ISD 13 and at the same time comply with the Minnesota Data Privacy Laws. Plug into your Library The Teen reading program entitled will have weekly drawings including D. t-shirts, thumb drives, books, and ear buds along with the standard Wave Pool pass and an extra incentive to finish the reading record. Thanks to Stages Theatre, the Library will provide Reading Program participants that complete E. How I Became a their reading record with a free ticket to Stages Theatre’s fall production of Pirate . This is a result of a collaborative effort between the Library, ISD 13, and Stages Theatre. The R.E.A.D. Dog program will be continued through the summer on Thursday evenings. I have F. begun discussions with Pals on Paws (Anoka County TDI therapy dogs) regarding a READ training session locally in the fall. This should help to alleviate some of the scheduling issues we have been having. I have agreed to provide a R.E.A.D. Dog program for Staff Day in August and will be preparing for this over the next few months. We have begun advertising for Volunteens and have received four applications to date. G. IV. MEETINGS I attended a CAPP (Community Arts Program Planning committee) meeting on April 9. The A. five-year plan was completed and is now ready to go to the ISD 13 School Board. Two additional committees within the District 13 received presentations in April. Their feedback was very positive. V. STAFF Pages have been busy preparing materials for upcoming programs, aiding in the weeding of A. materials, processing, checking selection tools and shelving. Library Aide, Cristy Tombarge established new book displays, prepared program tickets for B. summer programs, completed the Storytime closet inventory, prepared posters for summer performers, prepared booklists for the Summer Reading Programs, filed invoices and book orders, and worked on the Summer events calendar. Library Clerk, Kelly Olson placed book orders, received magazines and books, prepared C. Summer Reading Club flyers for both programs, switched standing orders for Fodors, created t- shirt designs for the R.E.A.D.-Dog Program and Plug In Teen program, and created an iron on transfer design for the Look What’s Cooking summer reading program.
