April operational report

I. BUILDING MAINTENANCE
A. The windows were cleaned 4/2.
B. A new key box was installed in the elevator equipment room 4/10.
C. Heights Electric had to repair an exit sign that shorted out 4/9.
D. Public Works fixed the exterior door handles 4/11.
E. Heights Electric performed the annual inspection on the emergency lights and doors 4/14.
F. The metal casing on the chimney stack rusted through and came loose. Public Works
removed the loose sections, and Honeywell installed a new unit 4/4.
G. Orkin performed the quarterly inspection for vermin 4/16.
H. Fidelity buffed the Activity Room floor 4/18.
I. The fire extinguishers received their annual maintenance 4/21.
J. The Beautification Committee planted pansies in the courtyard containers 4/21.
II. COLLECTION
A. Weekly orders were placed for items with requests.
B. Weekly orders were placed for items from current selection tools.
C. Two paperback orders were placed.
D. DVD and cd orders were also placed.
E. Work continues on straightening out the mess with Brodart and the Library’s standing
orders. Kelly is in the process of combining all the orders into a list to send in for a bid from
Baker and Taylor.
F. The Pages continue to work on mending the Adult Non-Fiction.
G. The genre project was completed 4/24 with the help of Ramon, Stacey, and volunteer Renee.
Kudos to them for all their work. The fiction shelves are looking good!
III. PROGRAMS
A. The Friends met 4/7 at the Dragon House Café with 10 members present.
B. The Library Board met 4/1 with 7 members in attendance.
C. R.E.A.D. Dogs continues to be an extremely well-received program.
D. Stacey and I attended the Volunteer Recognition dinner 4/16 in honor of the City Board and
Commission members. Mayor Gary Peterson acted as emcee for the evening.
E. The bulk loan was delivered to the schools 4/3.
F. Tax season ended with a bang. On 4/14 the copier ran out of change twice during the day.
The coin-op jammed and required a service call, which was answered within two hours.
Staff was very appreciative of the promptness of the response by the copier company. Staff
also thinks this was the busiest tax season since people started e-filing!
G. National Library Week (“Circle of Knowledge”) was celebrated 4/13-4/19.
H. Dana and Cristy provided the display for the case at City Hall for the month of April.
I. Exposed Brick Theatre performed their immigrant experience program 4/14.
J. Marsha provided four special Head Start field trips with programs 4/16 and 4/23.
K. Big Fun Family Circus put on a program 4/17.
L. Six people joined Dana for a lively discussion about The memory keeper’s daughter 4/24.
The group has decided to meet over the summer and will select their next books at May’s
book discussion.
M. Students from ICS visited the Library during their regularly-scheduled times 4/14-4/18.
N. Two field trips attended special programs provided by Marsha 4/28.
O. Marsha put on a program for a Family Literacy field trip 4/30.
IV. TECHNOLOGY
A. Kelly’s computer is in the process of being up-graded.
B. Al updated the Q 4/17.
C. I participated in an e-gov demonstration 4/28.
D. Coordinated Business replaced the hard drive in the departmental copier 4/24.
E. I attended a meeting 4/22 about potential replacement of City copiers.
V. STAFF
A. Marsha attended a CAPP meeting 4/9.
B. Al Mamaril celebrated his six-months anniversary as a Library Supervisor during the month.
C. Marsha attended the Summer Reading Club meeting 4/22.
D. I attended the Public Service meeting at Northtown 4/17.
E. I participated in a Webinar 4/15 on tutor.com. I was impressed and hope that this remains a
contender for adding to our MELSA online databases.
F. Stacey participated in a cable shoot 4/30.
G. Dana conducted interviews for the vacant Page positions the week of 4/8. 10 applicants
were interviewed. 3 people were hired and will begin training 5/1.
VI. FOUNDATION
A. The Foundation Board met 4/9 with 5 members present. The Library Board invited the
Foundation Board to join them on their entry in the Jamboree Parade. Discussion centered
th
around the open house in honor of the Library’s 80 Anniversary on 12/3 and the fundraiser
scheduled for 12/7. Donations were received in honor of long-time Friends member Evelyn
Reinholdson.
VII. MISC
A. The Library participated in both tornado drills on 4/124 as part of Severe Weather
Awareness Week. 19 people participated at 1:45 p.m. and 17 at 6:55 p.m.
B. Catherine Vesley, Secretary to the Library Board, accepted the National Library Week
Proclamation from Mayor Gary Peterson at the City Council meeting of 4/14.
C. I would like to recognize the excellent job my staff does the whole year round. 4/23 is
Administrative Professionals Day, but I would like to extend the recognition to everyone
who works for the Library. Kudos to you all!
