HomeMy WebLinkAboutOperational Report for Marsha To: M Rebecca Loader, Library Director From: Marsha Tubbs, Children’s and Young Adult Librarian Subject: March 2008 Operational Report Date: March 31, 2008 I. PROGRAMS A. The Kids read dogs listen program is well underway. We have 29 children participating and more signing up each week. I am in search of additional dog teams and have a couple of leads that look hopeful. The plan is to expand the program to a year round opportunity. B. Larry Yazzie appeared on March 10 to a very appreciative audience of 60. The classes from Immaculate Conception School visited the library the week of March 10-14. C. D. The bulk loan was delivered to the schools on March 6. E. Three preschool storytime sessions were held. Participation numbers were large (approximately 24 children each session). To help promote the new READ dog program, I visited North Park Elementary with one of the F. READ Dog Teams (Ardie Arko and Molly). The children were excited and the program is very popular. Kids G. R.E.A.D. ...Dogs Listen began on March 6. Teams of Therapy dogs and trainers will be here each Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon to listen to children reading. This is one of the programs being offered through the Minnesota After School Activities grant, a collaboration with Independent School District 13. II. COLLECTIONS A. Staff has caught up on the book order remaining from 2007. The new forms seem to be helping and staff is catching on quickly. B. With help from Stacey Hendren, Adult Services Clerk, we made adjustments in the YA paperback collections to reflect the NEW shelving labels. Thank you Stacey. III. PROJECTS A. Staff is working on locating and scheduling one or more author visits as a part of the Minnesota After School Activities grant. B. Preparations for summer reading programs are well underway. C. Kids READ… Dogs Listen will continue through May and plans are in the works to provide participants with t-shirts reflecting the Columbia Heights Program. D. Staff has been working their way through an inventory of the storytime collection. Once complete we will have an organized log of all materials and supplies that are currently a part of the collection. Thanks to Cristy Tombarge, Library Aide for her efforts on this project. E. Programming schedules for the 2008-year have been completed. Children’s Clerk, Kelly Olson, is in the process of preparing purchase requisitions for all performers. IV. GRANTS A. I wrote and received a grant from Dollar General. As a result we will be looking at adding more books on CD and bilingual materials to the collection V. MEETINGS I attended an open house at Al Amal school in Fridley on March 4. The program for the evening A. consisted of background information on the Muslim population, culture and the religion of Islam. I attended a CAPP (Community Arts Planning Project) meeting on March 10 from 4-6 pm. The B. organizational groundwork is coming along and I am optimistic that efforts will result in high quality arts programming within the community. I attend the Public Library Association National Convention from March 25 through March 28. I C. enjoyed the convention very much and came away with a number of ideas that I hope to implement in the near future. Thank you to the Library Administration and to the City for allowing me to attend. VI. STAFF A. Pages have finished checking the backlog of selection tools from 2007. They have aided the Read Dog coordinator on Thursday and Saturday and are dealing well with the increased volume of activity in the department. B. Library Aide, Cristy Tombarge, completed new bulletin boards for both floors, has nearly finished the storytime inventory, prepared booklists, printed materials and aided in the receipt of new books and materials. Cristy has also begun preparations for the summer reading program. Cristy also prepared flyers and invitations for this summer’s celebrity storytime series. C. Children’s Department Clerk, Kelly Olson, sent and received several orders for books and materials, processed contracts for performers, developed promotional materials for the programs related to After School Activities grant and began updating publications related to summer volunteers. D. An overwhelming number of staff reported the department being very busy on nights and weekends. Thanks to everyone for dealing well with the increased business.
